Gambling Arrests in Zirakpur

Zirakpur, in Himachal, has become a hotbed for gamblers.  Zirakpur is located in a convenient and easily accessible location near the airport, and near the railway station.  This location has become somewhat of a safe haven for those who partake in gambling, and especially for those who head up gambling, who travel to Zirakpur from Jalandhar, Amritsar, Delhi, and other locations.

In Zirakpur, there are many low budget hotels that have been springing up, which have been offering a secure location for those who gamble, and for those who take part in “satta” on both football, and on cricket.  These hotels also provide a location where some online wagering takes place.

A few days ago, at Nest, a hotel in Zirakpur, there were some arrests that took place.  The 10 arrests that took place were of high-profile gamblers.  During the time of the arrests, police found about one dozen mobile phones that had been used to help conduct the online gambling business for around the sum of Rs. 3.50 lakh.  These are not the first arrests made in a Zirakpur hotel, since other gambling related arrests were made during the IPL season.

The station house officer of Zirakpur, Trilochan Singh, said:  “Working on a tip-off, we laid a trap and arrested 10 persons on Sunday. They are from different towns of Punjab including Jalandhar, Amritsar and Patiala. They are all high-profile businessmen working in various fields including real-estate, besides agriculturists. Some even own petrol pumps. We recovered around Rs. 3.50 lakh cash from their possession.”

A senior police official from Mohali said:  “Gamblers from Delhi, Punjab and Haryana are using Zirakpur as a meeting point. They don’t mind driving four to five hours to reach here. They remain in touch with each other through e-mails and then rent easily available hotel rooms here to run their activities.”

The police have noted that they are keeping track of the gambling activities that are taking place, and have put the cell phones that were found under surveillance.
