India has had one of its biggest ever wins in a football match against Laos. The win saw India end the game with 6 – 1, beating Laos by a large margin. This important win ensure India a place in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers. The match took place at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium.
Laos made the first goal of the game, but once India got going, they were unstoppable. Three of India’s six goals were made within seven minutes. On June 2nd, India had also beaten Laos with a 1 – 0 victory in the first leg that took place in Vientiane. With the two matches combined, India ended with a 7 – 1 aggregate.
Laos had begun the game with strength, dominating the first 15 minutes. After Laos’ Sihavong easily kicked a goal in, the Indian team began to regroup. It still took some time, as was seen when Jeje Lalpekhlua, who later scored two goals, had missed his first attempt to score a goal. India’s first goal of the match was only scored in the 42nd minute of play.
Just before Jeje scored his first goal of the match, Coach Constantine had switched players, replacing Udanta Singh by Jackichand Singh. The change boded well for the Indian team, with a number of goals scored in rapid succession.
India’s six goals were made by five team members:
– Jeje Lalpekhlua kicked in two of the goals, in the 42nd and 74th minutes.
– Sumeet Passi made a goal in the 45th minute.
– Sandesh Jhingan scored his goal in the 49th minute.
– Mohd Rafique scored in the 83rd minute.
– The final goal was scored by Fulganco Cardozo in the 87th minute.
Since India had finished at the bottom of their group in the preliminary rounds of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, and the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the team needed a victory to make it to the Asian Cup Qualifiers.
