In India, while field hockey is a popular game, cricket is the sport that has held the dominant place in the Indian world of sports, including in the media, and in the hearts of the people. Cricket has certainly been a particularly profitable sport for the country, and sports such as hockey have been somewhat left behind.
Although cricket takes the number one spot, when the 2010 Men’s Hockey World Cup was held in India, the games attracted large crowds. When the Hero Hockey India League played recently, there were also large crowds in attendance at the various locations where games were held.
Between 20th June and 15th July, the Hockey World League will be taking place in Antwerp. In order to gather more interest in India, Star Sports has released a TV advertisement that has been designed to encourage the Indian public to root for the country’s national hockey team.
The advertisements features popular players including the team’s captain, Sardar Singh, Birendra Lakra, and Sreejesh Raveendran. The team’s head coach, Paul Van Ass also appears in the advertisement where he explains to a media team that the Indian hockey team is putting on a better performance than it ever has before. He explains that while the team is playing excellently, it is still not getting the support it should receive both from the media, and in turn individuals.
It is hoped that the Star Sports advertisement will do the trick, bringing hockey lovers to the fore, where they can support the team, along with others who simply share the pride of a successful Indian sports team.
The former Indian hockey captain, Viren Rasquinha, said: “The support of the fans can be a massive lift ot the hockey team. From my own experience, it gives you the strength to go on and fight in a crucial match when your lungs are bursting and when your legs are almost giving up on you.”
