India Team Sports Mothers’ Names on Jerseys

In the fifth One Day International against the Kiwis, the Indian cricket team members each wore their mother’s names on their cricket jerseys. The initiative that was set up to recognise and honour the moms behind the players was set up by Star India in collaboration with the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India). The initiative took place in order to highlight the importance of mothers in general, and not just those of the cricket players.

Uday Shankar, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Star India, commented on the unusual initiative: “This is the first time in the world that a team jersey is being used to power social change. Star Plus has taken an unprecedented leap in its Nayi Soch or new way of thinking. We compliment the BCCI and the Indian team for such a transformational collaboration.”

Anurag Thakur from the BCCI strongly supported the decision to recognise mothers. He said: “With this initiative in collaboration with Star India – ‘Nayi Soch’, our endeavour is to honour each and every woman. The Indian team will be sporting their mother’s name on the jerseys for the fifth ODI against New Zealand with intent to thank all the mothers for their efforts and sacrifices.”

Using the high profile cricket game to recognise women and mothers everywhere has helped to highlight the important role of women and how they help shape the future.
