Now that the excitement of the ICC World Twenty20 is over, Indian fans are looking forward to the next exciting cricket tournament, the IPL T20.
The Delhi Daredevils have announced that Zaheer Khan will be leading the team as their captain for the 2016 Vivo IPL season. This is the second season in a row that Zaheer will be playing for the Delhi Daredevils.
A few months ago, Zaheer announced his decision to retire from international cricket. The left-arm pace bowler has taken 311 wickets in 92 Tests, and has taken 282 One Day International wickets in 200 matches. In addition to this, Zaheer played in 17 Twenty20 Internationals for India.
The team is pleased with the decision to have Zaheer at their helm. Rahul Dravid, the Delhi Daredevils Team Mentor, commented on Zaheer’s captaincy for the IPL T20 season.
Dravid said: “Zaheer has been a leader for a very long time. Anyone who has followed Indian cricket will know the impact Zak has had. He has always proven himself to be one of the leaders. Zak has a big personality, but it is the steel, focus and drive behind the outward confidence which I think he will bring to the captaincy and that I am sure will inspire the rest of the team.”
“He has the respect of the dressing room and the franchise is proud to have him as our captain,” enthused Dravid. “I would like to congratulate him on the appointment and wish him, and the rest of the squad all the very best.”
Zaheer is excited to be filling the role of skipper for the Delhi Daredevils this season. He said: “It is a huge honour to captain Delhi Daredevils. To get this responsibility is a way for me to give back to the game.”
Zaheeer commented on the quality of the Delhi Daredevils this year: “I firmly believe that with the players currently involved we have the makings of a very good side, a young side that can surprise people. The potential of this group of players is immense and it is now up to us as players to turn that potential into consistent performances.”
The 9th IPL T20 begins on 9th April and ends on 29th May 2016.
