An NGO, the AAAAG (Aam Admi Aurat Against Gambling) has alleged that each time a political party is in the opposition, it tends to oppose gambling and casinos, however, when these parties manage to get into power, they seem to pass legislation that is in favor of casinos.
A meeting was set up by the AAAAG for today in Goa, to discuss what course of action should be taken regarding the amendment to the Goa Gambling Prevention Act. The AAAAG has made the decision to oppose the amendment to this act that would legalize offshore casinos, that would be located in inland rivers in Goa.
There has been much frustration felt by the AAAAG and others who oppose legalizing gambling in India since when Manohar Parrikar was the opposition leader, he opposed casinos, but now that he is the Chief Minister, he passes some legislation that supports the casino owners.
Although the silence has now been broken, it was not so long ago that Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco noted that there was silence from NGOs such as the Aam Aadmi Aurat Against Gambling at this time, even though when the Congress government ruled, the AAAAG had constantly spoken out against casinos operating in Goa.
Reginaldo had the following to say: “Today, it appears that chief minister Manohar Parrikar, and even firebrand activists have fallen in love with casinos.” Reginaldo also asked Parrikar not to promise Goans something that he would not be able to give them.
Parrikar criticized Reginaldo, who reacted to the criticism by saying: “Bitter truth always hurts, and the BJP government is badly stung with me exposing its frequent dishonorable U-turns, and as predicted, the government is attacking me.”
Reginaldo has also stated that the government that is currently in power “is run by the casino and mining lobby.”
