Ambati Rayudu To Retire From International Cricket And IPL

By Dhanu Delphi on July 5, 2019

India‘s Ambati Rayudu was considered the front runner to take the number four position and play at the 2019 ICC World Cup. However, a lack of consistency in ODI’s and an average performance during the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) hurt his chances. The Indian selectors subsequently decided to overlook him and pick all-rounder Vijay Shankar as the number 4 batsman for the World Cup. They did so on the basis that he offered three dimensional qualities.

Ambati Rayudu Hurt By Indian Selectors

When Ambati Rayudu was overlooked by the selectors, he was naturally disappointed as it was his dream to play at the 2019 World Cup. Most Indian cricketers don’t reveal their disappointment. However, Rayudu took to Twitter to put out a sarcastic tweet concerning ‘3D glasses’. He also hit back at the selectors and their decision to choose V Shankar over him.

Rayudu was not part of the 15 members to tour England. Nevertheless, he kept hoping that he might get a call up if anyone got injured. When Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out of the World Cup, the selectors decided to go with young Risbabh Pant, instead.

That was rubbing salt in Rayudu’s wounds. Naturally, he thought that he should be the one getting the call up for the number 4 spot. Just a few days later, Shankar injured his toe and was ruled out of the World Cup. Once again, the Indian selectors chose to ignore A Rayudu. This time around, they chose to go with opening batsman Mayank Agarwal, which was a huge insult to Rayudu.

Ambati Rayudu, who is 33 years old, found the rejection from the selectors too hard to digest. He has since decided to call time on his international career, as well as his IPL career.

Did Emotions Get The Better Of Rayudu?

Rayudu fans believe that he has let his emotions get the better of him and has made a premature decision. After all, the number 4 position is still shaky in the Indian team. Therefore, Rayudu definitely has a chance of making a comeback to the Indian team. However, it takes a lot of effort and commitment to overlook obvious insults. Not to mention, put in the hard work and make another run at being part of the playing eleven.

Rayudu still has a couple of years of international cricket left in him. Given the treatment dished out by the selectors, though, he has decided to call it a day. Rayudu’s treatment by the selectors is another reminder why it is never a good idea to go on social media and have a crack.

Retirement From IPL

What comes as a bigger surprise is that Rayudu not only decided to retire from international cricket but also from IPL. He played for the Mumbai Indians who are the favourites with the books to win IPL 2020. Most recently, Rayudu played for the Chennai Super Kings and would have definitely been picked for the 2020 edition of the IPL.

Most Indian players who retire from international cricket tend to play another 2 or 3 years in the IPL. That way, they get to make more money and also keep their cricketing career alive. Rayudu confirmed that while he has retired from the IPL and international cricket, he plans on playing T20 cricket in domestic leagues around the world.

Iceland Offers Permanent Residency

Iceland send out a weird tweet proposing to give Ambati Rayudu permanent residency so that he could play for Iceland and represent them. Interestingly, once this tweet went viral, Rayudu officially announced his retirement. He is yet to address the tweet or confirm if he would play any role in developing cricket in Iceland.

A number of domestic T20 leagues such as the Canadian T20 league and European T20 league will look to lure Rayudu to play for them. It will also be interesting to see if Rayudu suddenly does a U-turn and unretires once his emotions cool down!
