Anil Kumble, Andrew McDonald Get Head Coach Roles For IPL 2020

We are about six months away from the start of another Indian Premier League season and the franchises are busy at work making changes to help their teams prepare for IPL 2020. Most of the attention will focus on which players get traded and picked up during the IPL auction. The auction is scheduled for December 19. However, Kings XI Punjab and the Rajasthan Royals have already made a key change in their coaching staff as they have now appointed new head coaches.

Kumble Takes Over Kings XI Punjab

Former Indian Test skipper Anil Kumble has been appointed as the director of cricket operations for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2020. After replacing Mike Hesson from New Zealand, the 48-year-old skipper has gone on to become the first Indian head coach in IPL 2020. This role will now give Kumble the right to make all cricketing decisions associated with Kings XI Punjab.

The announcement was made recently at an event in New Delhi, India, by the franchise owners Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia and Preity Zinta. Apart from announcing their decision to appoint Kumble as the franchise head coach, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) also unveiled a new jersey that the team will adorn in the upcoming season of IPL.

Kumble has a huge task ahead of him. This is considering that Kings XI Punjab is one of the few teams in IPL that is yet to win the championship. They entered the playoffs twice in IPL history – once in the inaugural season in 2008 and the second in 2014. In 2014, they finished in second place after losing to Kolkata Knight Riders, which was captioned by Gautam Gambhir at the time.

During the last three years, KXIP has ranked fifth, seventh, and sixth respectively. The team will now rely on Kumble’s experience and good judgment to help them lay their hands on the coveted trophy.

Talking about his new role, Kumble said that consistency is what he will be focusing on in the team. He added that he was excited to work with the players. He also didn’t want the team to panic at any moment during the tournament.

Appointing Anil Kumble as the head coach is undoubtedly the right decision for KXIP. This is because he comes with several years of experience. Apart from coaching Team India, Kumble has led Royal Challengers Bangalore to victory in the IPL final in 2009. He also served as the chief mentor of Mumbai Indians in 2013.

McDonald Takes Over Rajasthan Royals

Andrew McDonald did not make a big impact as a cricketer for Australia. However, he has made much bigger contributions in his role as a coach. His first year as head coach for Victoria was one to remember. McDonald led his side to a Sheffield Field championship. He later became the head coach of the Big Bash League franchise ‘Melbourne Renegades’. They finished in seventh place last season. Under his guidance, McDonald led them to a BBL Championship win.

McDonald knows what it is like to play in the IPL. He played for the Delhi Daredevils back in 2009. He would then sign with Royal Challenges Bangalore (RCB) in 2012. McDonald has also coached in the IPL. He had a short stint as the bowling coach of RCB.

Rajasthan Royals interviewed a few candidates for this position. In the end, they decided that Andrew McDonald was the man for the job. He has signed a three-year contract with the franchise McDonald will look to turn around the fortunes of the Royals, who have a lot of Aussie players in their squad. The Royals have won the IPL Championship only once. That was during the first edition (2008), when Shane Warne was captain.
