Australia v New Zealand 2nd Test: Cricket Betting Tips

By James Pacheco on December 23, 2019

In the Australia v New Zealand series opener in Perth, the visiting Kiwis learned the hard way what many have known for a while: the hosts are extremely tough to beat on their own patch. The Aussies have sometimes struggled in the spinning pitches of the Sub-continent. They haven’t always enjoyed the swinging conditions in England either. But get them on hard, bouncy pitches at home and both the batsmen and the bowlers know how to get the best out of the conditions.

There’s no fool-proof way of New Zealand amending the mistakes they made in that first game but their best chance is to bat first and make sure that at least one player toughens it out to get a century.

Team News: Australia

Australia have an injury with the highly consistent Josh Hazlewood suffering a problem with his leg in that first match. Either Peter Siddle or James Pattison are likely to come in for him. Otherwise, the side should be the same one that comfortably won the First Test.

Mitchell Starc was man of the match after taking nine wickets while Marnus Labuschagne set the platform in the first innings with an excellent 143.

Team News: New Zealand

The Black Caps certainly have their work cut out here if they’re to level the series. The injured Lockie Ferguson will miss this Test. The Kiwis will also be hoping Trent Boult is fit enough to play after missing the first match. The early signs are that he should be fine. They really need the left-arm pacer to be at his best.

Venue for Australia v New Zealand 2nd Test: Melbourne Cricket Ground

The Melbourne Cricket Ground is known for its gigantic capacity and huge boundaries so this should make for a colourful spectacle.

This was one of Shane Warne’s favorite grounds and it’s one of the Australian wickets that’s best for spin bowling. That means both spinners Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Santner should play an important part.

Match odds for Australia v New Zealand

Backing Australia at 1.33 with Bet365 should be one of the safer sattas you’ll place on a cricket match in recent times, given how strong Australia tend to be at home and in Melbourne, in particular. It’s 6.0 on the New Zealand win and 7.5 on the draw, also with Bet365.

It’s a huge problem for any side when all the Australian fast bowlers are in such good form. Furthermore, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins are regarded as the best new-ball partnership in Test cricket today.

Having said all that, we should be able to provide better cricket betting tips than just that.

Australia First Innings Top Bowler Odds

Last time out our online betting tips on cricket included Mitchell Starc to be Australia’s top bowler in the first innings. That was largely because of his strong record in day-night Tests where he has an incredible ability to swing the pink ball under lights. That satta won pretty easily.

But it may be time to switch allegiances. The MCG wicket offers a different sort of challenge and may suit Pat Cummins. He’s not quite as quick as Starc but has more variations. He can take the pace off the ball and can bowl off-cutters.

With Hazlewood out and Lyon probably only playing a major role in the third or fourth innings as the pitch deteriorates, Cummins may only need to beat Starc for our satta to come in, at odds of 3.0.

New Zealand First Innings Top Batsman Odds

Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor have been carrying New Zealand with the bat for the last decade or so. But in recent times the left-hander Tom Latham has been just as good as either of them.

Particularly strong with the cut shot, the straight drive and the sweep, he didn’t get many runs in Perth. But he’s too good a player to miss out again.

Taylor and Williamson are both class acts but the stats suggest there’s not much to choose between them these days and with Latham a much bigger price at 4.75 than Williamson at 3.6 and slightly bigger than Taylor at 4.5, it makes sense to go with Latham at 4.75 with Betway.
