Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals: IPL Betting Tips

By Craig Simpkin on March 30, 2019

It’s Groundhog Day for these two teams in IPL 2019. The Chennai Super Kings picked up where they left off last season with a pair of resounding victories. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals, despite some encouraging performances, are yet to win a point. But who do our IPL tips for Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals favour?

On the face of it, this looks to be an open-and-shut case for a home win. Nevertheless, the Royals will no doubt have something to say about that. Let’s take a look at the sportsbook odds.

What are the IPL tips for Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals?

When we have a 1.61 favourite with the bookies, as the Super Kings are here, we know that most are expecting a one-sided contest. The Royals, at 2.30 with bet365, have all but been written off.

But limited overs cricket has a habit of throwing up surprising results. Furthermore, the stodgy pitch in Chennai – which served up just 141 runs in 34.5 overs in the season’s opener – could act as something of a leveller.

Spinners took 10 of the 13 wickets to fall, and MS Dhoni was quick to criticise the groundsmen at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. But the irony is that a turning wicket helps his bowling attack – Harbhajan, Jadeja, Tahir, Raina – more than it does the Royals. The latter will turn largely to Archer, Stokes and Unadkat.

While we’d like to back the underdogs at the price, the smart IPL 2019 satta goes on Chennai, for whom the conditions should suit.

Match Odds Summary: Chennai Super Kings 1.61 (Betway – Editor’s Pick), Rajasthan Royals 2.30 (Bet365).

What are the top batsman IPL tips for Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals?

The ageing Chennai batting order is still firing. And when you look at their top five or six you expect at least one of them to get a score. This is reflected in this betting market, where the top five are hard to separate.

Ambati Rayudu (4.00 with Betway) battled away manfully in the win over RCB. Meanwhile, Shane Watson (3.75) was somewhere near his explosive best in the win over Delhi. It would be foolish to write off Suresh Raina (4.33), too, and we’re yet to mention Murali Vijay (5.00) and Faf du Plessis (5.00) who haven’t started a game as yet.

Our preference is for one of the openers given the Royals’ one-dimensional bowling attack. Therefore, we’ll back Rayadu to top score for his side on Sunday. Sanju Samson blasted the first IPL 2019 century last time out. After looking good in his side’s opener as well, he commands respect at 4.33.

Elsewhere, Steve Smith (5.50) will be looking to step up his return to top-level cricket. However, the powerplay overs could be key for the Royal’s against Chennai’s spin-heavy attack, and so both of their openers also should come to the fore.

Jos Buttler (3.60) has shown form. Still, we expect Ajinkya Rahane to deliver a captain’s performance to get his side out of the doldrums here. He is comfortable against the spinning ball, and at odds of 4.00 with Betway looks good value.

Top Batsman Odds Summary: Chennai Super Kings: Watson 3.75, Rayadu 4.00 (Betway – Editor’s Pick), Raina 4.33, Vijay 5.00, du Plessis 5.00, Dhoni 7.00.

Rajasthan Royals: Buttler 3.60, Rahane 4.00 (Betway – Editor’s Pick), Samson 4.33, Livingstone 4.75, Vohra 5.00, Smith 5.50.

What are the total runs in match IPL tips for Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals?

In the one match played at Chennai’s home ground, there were just 141 runs scored. We expect there to be an improvement on Sunday. After all, the groundsmen won’t want to face the wrath of Dhoni again! Nonetheless, the sportsbooks have set the over/under total runs line at 320.5, and it would take some improvement to ‘go over’. So, we’re backing under 320.5 in the total runs market at 1.85.

Total Runs in Match Odds Summary: Over 320.5, 1.85, Under 320.5, 1.85 (Betway – Editor’s Pick).
