IPL 2019 Preview: Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians are one of the most successful teams in the history of the Indian Premier League. And, as the 2019 edition approaches, there will be plenty of interest here in the online cricket betting markets. Led by Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians are traditionally slow starters in the tournament, but will usually come through in the late stages to make a challenge for the title.

It’s been an interesting build up to IPL 12 for this talented side. But what can we look forward to when the tournament gets underway on March 23rd?

What are the Mumbai Indians Odds to win the 2019 IPL Title?

If you’re taking an IPL Satta online, 2019 markets show the Mumbai Indians at odds of 6.00 with Betway to win the title. That figure makes them joint second favourites, along with CSK. And there are many reasons to be positive ahead of the new season.

2018 wasn’t a great year for Mumbai as they finished in fifth place, outside of the playoffs. However, they have won the IPL title on three previous occasions. The Indians have also won the now-defunct Champions League twice. And as we’ll see, they retain the core of the side that has enjoyed that success.

Who are the best players in the Mumbai Indians Squad?

Rohit Sharma is the skipper of the Mumbai Indians once again. Moreover, throughout his captaincy, they have become one of the most successful IPL teams ever. He’s a record holder in both limited overs formats, and his runs will be crucial if Mumbai are to deliver on those IPL 2019 odds.

The explosive Evin Lewis is set to open with Rohit once again. Fans will also be excited to see Quinton De Kock sign up for 2019. The South African left hander has a good IPL record and the selectors simply must find room for him.

The West Indian, Kieron Pollard, is among the best all-rounders in World Cricket and is another player who has been key to Mumbai Indians’ success over the years. In the bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah has emerged from being a raw youngster to one of India’s main weapons with the new ball.

Bumrah will be the focal point of an attack that is also set to include the Pandya brothers, Hardik and Krunal. And then there is the veteran Sri Lankan cricketer, Lasith Malinga. He is not just the leading wicket taker for Mumbai, but also for the entire Indian Premier League tournament.

Who are the highest paid players in the Mumbai Indians Squad?

Compared with other IPL teams, Mumbai pay some big wages. That’s one of the reasons why they are a strong prospect for matka gambling. When the retained player list for 2019 was released, Rohit Sharma led the way with $2.1 million, followed by Hardik Pandya with $1.5 million. That figure puts him ahead of his brother, Krunal, at $1.2 million.

Two Indian players drop just below the seven-figure mark. Namely, Jasprit Bumrah at $974,000, followed by Ishan Kishan at $862,000. Salaries for incoming players aren’t widely disclosed. However, it’s clear that Mumbai are big payers. Will that money be enough to turn another profit in the IPL betting markets this season?

Mumbai Indians History

The Mumbai Indians have been in the Indian Premier League since it began in 2008. They have won three titles so far. Furthermore, that third outright victory in 2017 made them the most successful of all IPL teams at that time. Chennai Super Kings have since equaled the record. But this is a strong franchise and for IPL online betting, 2019 will see a lot of support for the men from Mumbai.

Despite that long period of success, things haven’t always been comfortable for Mumbai. In fact, in the early days of the competition, they were one of the weaker teams. They’ve always fielded skilled players including Lasith Malinga, Rohit Sharma, Herschelle Gibbs and Sanath Jayasuriya. However, it took the franchise two years before they made it out of the playoffs.

Having lost the final in 2010, interest in IPL betting on Mumbai increased. Success then finally came in 2013. After a solid group campaign, it was Kieron Pollard with 60 from just 32 balls who sealed the final against CSK.

Two years later, Mumbai were at it again as they won their second IPL title in three years. Chennai were the beaten finalists once again. This time around, though, victory was more emphatic as Mumbai won by 41 runs having set a target of 202/5.

2017 saw Mumbai Indians set a new record of three IPL tournament victories. The win against Pune in the final was far from easy, however, and in the end, Rohit Sharma’s men squeezed home by a slim one-run margins. They had been involved in the closest IPL final in history and set a new record in the process.

Mumbai went into the 2018 tournament as one of the favourites in the IPL betting markets. Unusually for this successful franchise, they then finished in fifth place, outside of the playoffs. This time around, the Indians will aim to put that right, and here are some of the players aiming to do that.

Notable Player Movements

The arrival of Quinton De Kock was the first major transfer of the close season. It also gives hope to anyone looking at Mumbai and considering Matka gambling for 2019. The South Africa was at RCB last year, and was previously a prolific run scorer for Delhi. So much is expected of the keeper/batsman.

Otherwise, Mumbai retain much of the squad that just missed out on the playoffs last season. The acquisition of Barinder Sran could, however, be a vital one. Sran is now with his fourth IPL franchise. And while he’s never been a settled starter, he can be a dangerous left arm seamer.

Mumbai have also picked up Yuvraj Singh following his release from Kings XI Punjab. Yuvi has often been one of the highest paid players in the competition. He has also been disappointing at times.

There hasn’t been much movement away from the franchise. So, Mumbai will go into the tournament with a settled squad, and will hope that they can justify their win price in the 2019 IPL odds markets.

Season by Season Record

Here are the Mumbai Indians’ results in the Indian Premier League since the tournament began in 2008:

2008: Fifth
2009: Seventh
2010: Beaten Finalists
2011: Beaten in Second Qualifier
2012: Beaten in Eliminator
2013: Champions
2014: Beaten in Preliminary Knockout Round
2015: Champions
2016: Fifth Place
2017: Champions
2018: Fifth Place

Those numbers show that Mumbai were slow starters in the Indian Premier League. Nonetheless, they have been in the playoffs for most of the years since 2010. Last year’s fifth place was thus something of a surprise. However, the three-time champions should come back stronger and be a popular option in the online cricket betting markets for 2019.

Notable Facts About Mumbai Indians

The following facts and statistics were updated at the end of the 2018 Indian Premier League.

Who are the owners of Mumbai Indians?

Reliance Industries, the biggest conglomerate in India, owns the Mumbai Indians. This makes them one of the richest clubs at the IPL.

Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani are the familiar faces of Reliance. Nita, in particular, is a vocal supporter of her team.

Where do Mumbai Indians play?

Mumbai Indians play most of their home games at the Wankhede Stadium in the city. This famous ground has hosted many international matches. It will therefore be very familiar to cricket fans both inside and outside of India.

Built in 1974, the Wankhede has a small capacity of just over 33,000. But that sees the ground packed with noisy Mumbai fans, making it an intimidating place for visiting teams. So the Indians are a sound option in online cricket betting markets when playing at home.

When they have to move away from their first choice, Mumbai Indians have a second venue in the city. Namely, the 25,000 capacity Brabourne Stadium.

Projected 2019 Starting Line Up

Like all franchises, there are some guaranteed spots in this Mumbai starting XI. Rohit Sharma will clearly be involved, while Jasprit Bumrah will take the new ball. There are similar, guaranteed berths as we move through the order.

Whether Rohit will open the batting remains to be seen. We feel this is his best position and that he should renew his partnership with Evin Lewis. But the skipper often likes to drop down the order. The arrival of Quinton De Kock also suggests that the South African may open with Lewis, at the expense of the skipper.

Meanwhile, the Pandya brothers are also expected to start. There’s likely to be a place for Kieron Pollard too. The West Indian is an inconsistent performer these days, but can always turn a game with bat, ball, or in the field.

Looking at this squad, if we were taking an IPL Satta online, 2019 would hopefully give us the following Mumbai starting XI.

1. Rohit Sharma
2. Evin Lewis
3. Quinton De Kock
4. Ishan Kishan
5. Yuvraj Singh
6. Kieron Pollard
7. Hardik Pandya
8. Krunal Pandya
9. Barinder Sran
10. Adam Milne
11. Jasprit Bumrah

Team Strengths

If you’re looking for explosive batting, then keep an eye on Mumbai Indians this season. Rohit Sharma and Evin Lewis can form a power hitting duo at the top. And while Rohit can sometimes look to drop himself down the order, his best place is at the very top, alongside his West Indian teammate.

Now we have Quinton de Kock in the side, plus regular Mumbai big hitters, such as Kieron Pollard. Mumbai can use that power and take games away from their opponents in a very short space of time.

Team Weaknesses

It’s difficult to find a weakness here, but perhaps Mumbai are lacking a front line spinner. Slow bowling plays a big part in IPL at times and this could be an issue in 2019.

Krunal Pandya has a role to play. But as a spinner, he’s not yet in the class of an Ashwin or a Jadeja.
