IPL 2019 Preview: Sunrisers Hyderabad

They are the newest members of the IPL family and are also a successful franchise. In their brief existence, Sunrisers Hyderabad moved quickly after being founded in 2012. In a short space of time, they have reached two Indian Premier League finals.

SRH won the IPL in 2016 and are always a strong option in the online cricket betting markets. As we’ll now see, the team are getting plenty of support for the 12th edition of the tournament.

What are Sunrisers Hyderabad’s odds to win the 2019 IPL Title?

If you’re getting involved in IPL online betting, 2019 shows Sunrisers Hyderabad as the favourites to win the title. Betway have them at 5.50. That puts them just ahead of Chennai Super Kings and the rest of the chasing pack.

They are a side with long batting depth and some good balance, plus a talented bowling attack. With a strong overseas roster, 5.50 could be a good price. But who are the men set to deliver in the IPL 2019 odds markets?

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Who are the best players on the Sunrisers Hyderabad Squad?

The return of David Warner should give Sunrisers Hyderabad a big boost. And while the Aussie will get a mixed reception around India, he is a big favourite here. Kane Williamson is also back this year in a side that is packed with top order overseas players.

Jonny Bairstow and Martin Guptill will both be eyeing up a starting berth after strong international seasons. One or both of those players will have to wait patiently, however. That’s because the leg spinning genius, Rashid Khan, is vital to this team.

Who are the highest paid players in the Sunrisers Hyderabad Squad?

The disclosed salaries for most IPL teams in this season’s tournament focus mainly on the retained players. When Sunrisers Hyderabad released their retained list at the end of 2018, David Warner was way ahead of the rest at 12.5 Crore.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been a great wicket taker for SRH in recent seasons. And the seamer commands a healthy 8.5 Crore. But that puts him some way behind international team mate Manish Pandey at 11 Crore. Other notable salaries in this Sunrisers Hyderabad squad include Deepak Hooda at 3.6 Crore. And Vijay Shankar at 3.2 Crore.

Backed by a wealthy owner, those are some major numbers and they should help SRH get an edge in the IPL 2019 odds markets.

Sunrisers Hyderabad History

The Sunrisers Hyderabad were formed in 2012. The next year, they then made their debut in the sixth edition of the IPL. SRH made a good early impression, too. The team made it out of the groups in 2013 before they were beaten in the eliminator by Rajasthan Royals.

The franchise wasn’t able to repeat that success straight away. In the next two seasons, the Sunrisers failed to make it out of the playoffs. Glory wasn’t too far away, though. In 2016, SRH landed the ultimate prize as they claimed their first title.

This was a franchise that has always been able to field talented squads. But in that 2016 tournament, those players delivered and gave punters a healthy return in the online cricket betting markets.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar took the Purple Cap as the tournament’s leading wicket taker. Meanwhile, Mustafizur Rahman wasn’t far behind. David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan scored heavily for their side, too. And in the final, it was Warner’s 69 that helped his side home against RCB.

To date, Sunrisers Hyderabad haven’t been able to repeat that result. However, they made it out of the groups in both 2017 and 2018. At IPL 11 last year, Kane Williamson scored heavily to take his side to the final. In the end, though, a strong Chennai XI came through.

It’s therefore been a brief, but successful, history for SRH. And for those taking an IPL Satta online, 2019 may yet hold another title for the men in orange.

Notable Player Movement

David Warner is not a new player, but it’s significant that he has returned to this Sunrisers squad for 2019. Last year, he was left out after his role in Australia’s ball tampering affair. In 2019, Warner is back and his being at the top of the order makes SRH a strong matka gambling option for IPL 12. The loss of Shikhar Dhawan to Delhi Capitals is, however, a big blow. The prolific left hander would have made a great top three along with Warner and Kane Williamson. Moving the other way, Sunrisers have picked up Vijay Shankar, Abhishek Sharma and Shahbaz Nadeem from Delhi. Fans will be now be hoping that they can compensate for the loss of Dhawan.

Carlos Brathwaite also leaves the side to play for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018. He’s a powerful striker of the ball, but was on the SRH sidelines for much of 2018.

In terms of further arrivals, the signing of Jonny Bairstow is worthy of note. He has been prolific for England in limited overs cricket. But will he suffer the same fate as Alex Hales, who watched on from the dugout for most of 2018? New Zealand’s new arrival, Martin Guptill, may be in a similar position as he looks to displace Warner and Williamson at the top of the order.

It was, therefore, a busy auction for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. But can this squad deliver glory in the IPL betting markets for 2019?

Season by Season Record

Here is a full rundown of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s results since they entered the IPL in 2013.

2008: Did not Compete
2009: Did not Compete
2010: Did not Compete
2011: Did not Compete
2012: Did not Compete
2013: Beaten in Eliminator
2014: Sixth
2015: Sixth
2016: Champions
2017: Beaten in first Preliminary Round
2018: Beaten Finalists

It’s an impressive feat for any of the current IPL teams to appear in four knockout phases in six years. With such a talented bunch of current players, SRH should go deep into the tournament once again. But if you’re backing them in online betting, 2019 needs to compensate for the loss of Shikhar Dhawan.

Notable Facts about Sunrisers Hyderabad

The following statistics and records were updated at the end of the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League:

Who are the owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad?

Unlike some franchises where the ownership is split, just one man is at the helm of the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise. Kalanithi Maran, founder and owner of the Sun TV Network is a powerful backer who has been at the heart of his team’s success since they were formed.

Maran’s financial backing has been key to the 2016 title win. And, although SRH are a new franchise, they are a first matka gambling choice for many. If that success continues, they could also go on to become the most successful of all IPL teams.

Where do Sunrisers Hyderabad play?

The Sunrisers Hyderabad play most of their home matches at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. It’s located in the city and, with a capacity of 60,000, this is one of the largest grounds in Asia.

The Sunrisers have a loyal following and Hyderabad has a large catchment area. So when you can pack 60,000 cricket mad fans into the stadium, SRH become a sound option in the IPL betting markets.

Projected 2019 Starting Line Up

There were times that Kane Williamson didn’t make it into this starting XI. Considered too pedestrian for T20 cricket, the Kiwi sat on the sidelines, but that’s not likely to happen again this year. In 2018, Williamson took the Orange Cap for leading run scorer. And he’s going to be a popular option in the same IPL betting market this year.

Williamson must start and so will David Warner and Rashid Khan. So that’s three of the four overseas berths sewn up. Rashid’s batting is also developing. That leaves Jonny Bairstow, Martin Guptill, Mohammad Nabi, Billy Stanlake and Shakib Al Hasan fighting for one slot.

We’re giving the nod to Shakib here because of his versatility as an all rounder. But the others will surely be involved at some stage.

There are a number of domestic players who are definite starters here, including Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yusuf Pathan. But there are also a number of places up for grabs. Taking all of those options into account, we would like to see the following XI if Sunrisers are to justify their price in the online cricket betting markets.

1. David Warner
2. Wriddhiman Saha
3. Kane Williamson
4. Manish Pandey
5. Yusuf Pathan
6. Shakib Al Hasan
7. Deepak Hooda
8. Rashid Khan
9. Bhuvneshwar Kumar
10. Siddarth Kaul
11. Sandeep Sharma

Team Strengths

We’ve touched on the loss of Shikhar Dhawan. However, Sunrisers have often fielded the strongest top three batters in the competition. Selectors have tinkered with the squad at times, rotating between Alex Hales and Wriddhiman Saha as openers in 2018, and they would benefit from a settled XI.

As we’ve seen, it’s going to be tough to pick a place for a third overseas batsman. Nevertheless, batting depth is their strength and should be key if those IPL 2019 odds of 5.50 are to be proved correct.

Team Weaknesses

Looking at this squad makes it easy to see why Sunrisers Hyderabad are the current favourites in the IPL 2019 odds markets. It’s tough to spot a weakness. But perhaps another front line spinner would enhance that starting XI.

Shakib Al Hasan will back up Rashid Khan. In a tournament where spin can play such a big part, though, Sunrisers Hyderabad fans might like to see some more slow bowling options.
