The Indian sportsman is ranked fifth on the list, and has a brand value that reaches $20 million for 2014. The year before that, Dhoni’s brand value was a bit higher at $21 million. Other sportsmen that made the top of the list are LeBron James, the American basketball player, Tiger Woods, the famous golfer, and both Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal, the top tennis players.
The Forbes article explained that Dhoni had signed more than one bat sponsorship deal later on in 2013. The deals were signed with Amity University and Spartan Sports. The brand value of these two deals when added together reach a combined total that amounts to about $4 million per year. Previously, Dhoni had a deal with Reebok, and was paid $1 million a year.
Forbes published a Forbes Fab 40, and included in that are the 10 most valuable sports brands. This value is worked out in comparison to competitors. In addition to this, heading up the top branded sports event is the Super Bowl that brought in a revenue of about $518 million. Few sporting events can reach that large an income, and certainly not sports events that take place in India.
While Dhoni may have a huge brand value of $20 million, the top brand value, for LeBron James, was listed to have a value of $37 million in 2014. From 2007 until this year, Tiger Woods held the number one spot on the list for the largest brand value each year. This is the first year since 2007 that another player has topped Woods’ brand value. Woods has a brand value of $36 million, which makes him a close second to James. Federer has a brand value of $32 million.
