Anil Kumble Asks Selectors To Find Out If Dhoni Will Play T20 World Cup

India is set to play a 3 match T20 series against South Africa a few days from now. However, one player who will be absent from the squad yet again is MS Dhoni. The former captain also missed the recent T20 and ODI series in the West Indies as he had requested the BCCI for a 2-month sabbatical.

There has been no news from MS Dhoni or the selectors with regards to his cricketing future. The only statement is MS Dhoni is away on national duty to fulfill his obligations to the Indian army.

Anil Kumble Asks Selectors To Talk To Dhoni

Former Indian captain and ex-head coach Anil Kumble recently said it is time for the selectors to sit down with MS Dhoni. The big topic? Dhoni’s future. It is no secret that MS Dhoni is near the end of his international career. Although, Dhoni has refused to put a date to his retirement plans.

There were many who believed that MS Dhoni would call it a day after the 2019 World Cup but it looks like Dhoni still has plans to keep playing. The T20 World Cup taking place next year could be a motivating factor for the former captain to have one more shot of helping India lift another World Cup.

However for that to happen, MS Dhoni needs to continue playing T20 cricket for India and making his presence felt in the side. By disappearing without informing the selectors on the general public about his future plans, he has made it difficult for everyone involved.

Kumble believes that MS Dhoni needs a proper send-off. He thinks the selectors need to plan one after they find out his plans for the future. The former leg-spinner said that while R Pant is a talented wicket-keeper batsman he has been inconsistent which means his place in the squad is still under scrutiny.

Find Out If Dhoni Will Play T20 World Cup

Kumble said the selectors need to first establish if MS Dhoni wants to play the T20 World Cup in 2020. If he is interested, then he should be playing all the T20 matches to see his form and if he can be a part of the 2020 World Cup squad. On the other hand, if he plans to retire before the World Cup, the selectors can then start to groom another wicket-keeper batsman apart from R Pant.

Kumble says the selectors cannot waste any more time. He wants them to have a much-needed discussion with MS Dhoni in the next couple of months. Chief Selector MSK Prasad stated an experienced cricketer like Dhoni knows when to retire and they would not pressure him.

It would make it easier on the selectors if MS Dhoni decides to release a statement and end future speculation. Dhoni deserves to go out on his own terms. However, if he continues to play and perform poorly, the selectors will have to take a tough decision!

R Ashwin Is Best Spinner In India

A Kumble who is India’s highest test wicket-taker with 619 wickets also shared his thoughts on R Ashwin. Kumble says R Ashwin is still the number one spinner in the country. He said he should be included in the playing eleven.

R Ashwin was left out for both the recent test matches against the West Indies in favor of R Jadeja. Jadeja ended up playing well. Kumble said that he backed both Ashwin and Jadeja to be in the test squad. But, according to him, R Ashwin was ahead of R Jadeja because of hit batting skills.
