After a recent injury, it was unclear whether Indian team captain, MS Dhoni, weould be able to play in the Tri Nation series. Not only did Dhoni end up playing, he took the Indian cricket team to victory on Thursday, beating the Sri Lankan team.
Sri Lanka was first up to bat and India bowled out the Sri Lanka team for 201. India may have been looking at a loss, when Dhoni came in to bat and literally saved the day. The team’s captain hit 16 off the first four balls. He hit two sixes and a four and took the team to a one run victory with two balls left over.
When Dhoni was running, it looked as if he was still suffering some discomfort from his recent hamstring injury, yet he still managed to help the Indian team win the Tri Nation Series. Sri Lanka had started out well, but things seemed to decline towards the end, with the team only making 27 runs off their last six wickets.
While the Indian team started out much along the same lines as the Sri Lankan team, also entering a slump towards the end. The India team only had a turnaround when Dhoni stepped in. Dhoni managed to take the team to victory even though Sri Lanka had saved Lasith Malinga, the team’s best finishing bowler, for the 48th over.
After the game, Dhoni stated: “I think I am blessed with a bit of good cricketing sense.” He further explained: “The opposition bowler was not the most experienced in that last over, unlike Malinga, so I thought I would take my chances. I went with a heavy bat and the weight was perfect for slogging.”
Unfortunately for the West Indies, hosts of the Tri Nation Series, they did not make the finals and placed third overall.
