South Africa May Sack Faf du Plessis If They Lose Freedom Series 3-0

By Dhanu Delphi on October 15, 2019

South Africa have already conceded the three-match Freedom test series to India after losing the first two tests. The Proteas will play for pride in the third test and captain Faf du Plessis will be desperate to win. He knows that the selectors could very well strip him of his post as captain.

South Africa Massive Underdogs

The third and final test will take place in Ranchi from October 19 to 23. South Africa are massive underdogs with odds of 11/1. India continue to be the betting favourites and have odds of 3/8. Meanwhile, a draw has odds of 4/1.

South African fans have been furious at the way the team folded in the second test and lost by an innings and 137 runs. The President of Cricket South Africa (CSA) has called on fans to be patient with this new team, reminding them that a lot of experienced players (AB Devilliers, Hashim Amla, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel) have retired. It will take time for the new group of players to find their feet.

The one man that is feeling the pressure more than anyone else is captain Faf du Plessis. He is tired of making excuses and feeling the wrath of South African fans. Faf needs to win the third test or ensure that South Africa put up a good fight and take it into the fifth and final day.

If for some reason the Proteas surrender tamely once again, it might be time for CSA to take the captaincy burden off Faf du Plessis and see if a new leader can turn things around.

Who Can Captain South Africa In Test Cricket?

CSA will be a bit hesitant to strip Faf of the captaincy. They desperately need his experience and leadership in the team. However, Faf has not had the results he would have liked in all formats during 2019 and looks burdened by the growing pressures of captaining a failing South African team.

The next challenge for South Africa is playing England at home and it is going to be another daunting task for the Proteas. CSA might want to give Faf one last crack at the captaincy and see how he performs in familiar conditions. However, it might be time for CSA to roll the dice and take a chance like they did when they appointed a young Graeme Smith as test captain.

While there has been talk of appointing Aiden Markram or Dean Elgar as captain, the best candidate at this point in time is Quinton de Kock. Markram has struggled with consistency at the top of the order. He really needs to cement his place in the side before taking on more responsibility.

Elgar has the experience. But given the fact that he is already 32, he is not a long term prospect for South Africa. Quinny is just 26 years old and did well as captain in the T20 series against India.

South Africa currently have 0 points on the World Test Championship points table. The Proteas cannot afford to keep delaying the inevitable. Faf du Plessis is 35 and has, at best, another 12 months left in international cricket.

India Will Continue To Put Pressure

While Faf has failed as captain, Virat Kohli has done really well as captain. He has promised to continue to impose pressure on South Africa during the third test. India are keen on winning the third test and completing another series whitewash 3-0. Kohli has his eyes on the World Test Championship and is keen on taking this test team to the next level!
