Global T20 Canada League Getting Publicity After Big-Name Participation

By Dhanu Delphi on August 6, 2019

When it comes to T20 leagues around the world, the Indian Premier League and the Big Bash tend to get the most attention as they are the biggest and most popular T20 leagues in the world. Smaller T20 leagues such as Bangladesh Premier League, the Caribbean Premier League and Global T20 Canada fly under the radar and don’t get as much media attention from the media and sportsbooks as they would like.

Global T20 Canada League

The latest T20 league that is making headlines in the world of cricket is the Global T20 Canada League. That’s because the league has been signing up some of the world’s top international players, as well as some recently retired T20 stars.

The participation of these big names in Canada’s T20 tournament has given the league the publicity they desire. It will also ensure that they can build on this platform for the coming seasons. A number of bookies have also started accepting bets on the Global T20 Canada League. Odds are being offered for each game and also on teams to win outright.

Six Teams Taking Part in Global T20 Canada

The T20 league started on July 25. It will subsequently run for three weeks with the final set to be played in Brampton on August 11. The Global T20 League features 6 teams and follows a similar format as the Indian Premier League. Qualifier 1 will be played on 8 August followed by an Eliminator on 9 August. Qualifier 2 will be played on 10 August. The winner will then meet the winner of Qualifier 1 in the grand finale.

The six teams taking part are the Brampton Wolves, Edmonton Royals, Vancouver Knights, Winnipeg Hawks, Montreal Tigers and Toronto Nationals. The composition of each squad is mostly made up of young Canadian cricketers with a nice mix of international players who will look to add the experience and firepower to each of the six sides. We take a look at the international players who feature in each of these squads.

Brampton Wolves

This franchise has signed one of the best all-rounders in the world in Shakib-Al-Hasan, along with Lendl Simmons, Wahab Riaz, Andre Fletcher and Colin Munro. Some of the recently retired players in the squad include Shahid Afridi and Darren Sammy.

Edmonton Royals

The Edmonton Royals have signed up South African captain Faf-du-Plessis, and all-rounders Shadab Khan, James Neesham, Ben Cutting and Davy Jacobs.

Vancouver Knights

The Vancouver Knights have signed big guns from the West Indies such as Chris Gayle and Andre Russell. They also have Tim Southee and Shoaib Malik.

Winnipeg Hawks

The Winnipeg Hawks have put together a great squad of overseas players featuring the big-hitting Chris Lynn, Umar Akmal, Dwayne Smith, Dwayne Bravo and recently retired South African all-rounder JP Duminy.

Montreal Tigers

The Tigers have signed former Australian skipper George Bailey, Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera, I Udana and N Dickwella. Some of the other overseas players include Fawad Ahmed, Sunil Narine and Kemo Paul.

Toronto Nationals

The Toronto Nationals have signed up South African wicket-keeper batsman Heinrich Klaasen, Kieron Pollard, Mitchell McClenaghan and the retired Brendon McCullum and Yuvraj Singh. Also in the squad is former Chennai Super Kings player Manpreet Gony.

While the list of overseas players is indeed impressive, we must point out that not all of them will be in attendance. Some of them will miss out on a lot of the matches due to international duty.

Wolves And Knights – Top Two Teams in Global T20 Canada

The two teams currently on top of the table after each franchise has played a total of 5 games are the Brampton Wolvers (8 points) and the Vancouver Knights (7 points).
