How to Bet on IPL: Betting Tips for Beginners
Making money with IPL Betting
As the richest, most high-profile, most-watched and star-studded T20 franchise League in the world, the IPL is one of the most important fixtures on the international cricket calendar and fans try cashing in on IPL betting.
Being an IPL cricket punter is a challenging but potentially highly rewarding challenge. To come out on top you’ll have to learn how to study the stats, understand the conditions on the day and separate the wheat from the chaff in terms of what’s important and what’s just noise.
It can be done and once you get you head around it, the whole process will become second nature to you. Just read our IPL betting guide to get you started.
IPL betting: Three sacred keys to success
Every successful IPL bettor will have their own theories about how to bet on IPL, what guarantees profit in the long run and which are the most important factors, but most would agree that these three are sacred.
Don’t chase losses, don’t bet just for the sake of it, don’t bet on the team you support or oppose the team you dislike. Adopt a cold, analytical, clear-headed approach to your betting and make sure that you’re always in control of what you do.
- Superior money management
Being a winner in the long-term means you should never put all your eggs in one basket. Never risking too much of your bank and knowing what portion of it you should place on your next bet is a big part of the game.
- Identify a good bet or value
Arguably the most important of them all. Professional IPL bettors will swear by the theory that you only wager based on betting value and that if there isn’t value in the wager, you should keep your powder dry.
Choosing your Sportsbook carefully for IPL betting
Not all Sportsbooks accept Indian customers
Online gambling in India is a very new concept compared to Europe and some other Asian countries, so it’s very much a case of legally betting online in India being in its infancy.
The likes of 10CRIC, Betway and Bet365 are among the Sportsbooks who accept Indian customers and have the experience and knowledge from decades of being in business to ensure that you don’t have anything to worry about.
What to look out for in a Sportsbook?
There are a few ‘musts’ that you’d expect a reliable, reputable and trustworthy Sportsbook to have.
The first of those is that they offer generous odds. The more often you bet on IPL matches, the more of a difference that the odds on offer make.
A second important factor is how easy and painless it is to get your money in and out of your account. We’ll come to deposit options in a second (see below) but you want to be assured that your money is safe and there to withdraw it whenever you wish. Of course, there will be certain KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements that you’ll have to fulfil such as proving that you are who you say you are and that you’re living in the country that you claim to.
First, you’ll need to make a deposit. The more depositing options available at the Sportsbook, the better. The bare minimum is that you can use: Visa or Mastercard in terms of cards, a bank transfer, a pre-paid card and that at least one of the E-wallets such as PayPal, Skrill or Neteller are available.
Another thing to consider is the quality of the welcome bonus. You’ll only be able to claim it once as a new customer so you might as well get the best one you can. Further promotions the Sportsbook offers to existing customers are also important.
Cricket fans will also want a Sportsbook that covers all the other major cricket events beyond IPL, such as Big Bash League, the upcoming The Hundred and the different Test, ODI and T20I Series.
Not to mention other top sports.
The better Sportsbooks also have lots of variety when it comes to betting markets and a strong in-play product, in addition to a good pre-match offering.

- Most Sportsbooks have a standard welcome offer while others will give you a choice when it comes to your welcome offer. If that’s the case, pick the one you prefer.
- Make your first deposit. This will normally result in being given a bonus based on the amount you deposited.
- Now you’re good to go in terms of placing your first Sportsbook bet.
Explaining cricket betting odds
What do odds mean?
If you’re going to learn IPL betting, you’ll first need to understand what odds are and how they work.
Odds are just a way of expressing the probability of something happening. For example, a 4.0 chance (in decimal odds) is a 3/1 shot (in fractional odds) which means that the event is likely to happen once in every three times it takes place. So, if the Chennai Super Kings are 4.0 or 3/1 to win the IPL, the theory goes that if you played out the tournament three times, Chennai would win it once.
If you’re having trouble getting your head round how odds work and prefer to think of things happening in terms of percentages, you can find websites that convert percentages into odds to make it easier for you.
How do odds work?
One of the most important things to remember is that an odds-on chance will always be a number less than 2.0 e.g. 1.7, 1.4, 1.55. The shorter the odds, the more likely it is to happen.
An odds-against chance will always be a number greater than 2.0 (e.g. 4.0, 6.5, 12.0) and in this case, the bigger the number, the less likely the event is to happen. But of course, the more you’ll be paid out at if it does win!
When people talk about betting value, what they mean is that the odds on offer are more generous than what they should be.
Popular IPL betting markets
There are endless season-long bets and bets ahead of individual IPL matches to look forward to, but these are some of the most popular:
- Outright pick (tournament)
Who’s going to be crowned IPL champion? This market is available before the IPL starts and will be constantly updated as the tournament progresses. In other words, the odds on the different teams winning will change based on results and performances.

- Coin toss
It’s just betting on which captain wins the toss at the start of the match. Truth be told, this is a betting market that requires no skill or analysis to play. Either way, it’s there if you want to try it.

- Match result
Who’s going to win the match? Remember that you can bet pre-match or in-play, where the odds will constantly change with each boundary, wicket or even with each dot ball. This is the most popular match market by a country mile.
- Top run-scorer (Orange Cap) and wicket-taker (Purple Cap)
Similar to the outright pick, the odds on the batsmen and bowlers who could be the Orange Cap or Purple Cap winner are available before the off and constantly change after the tournament begins. Because they’re both such open markets, the odds on any runner will be high if you bet before it starts.
A good IPL betting strategy is to back batsmen who are openers, are around for the whole tournament and play for sides based at high-scoring grounds.

Free IPL betting tips and strategies for beginners
There could be up to 20 or 30 different factors that affect the outcome on an IPL match and the more of them you consider, the better for you. But these are the most important and we’ll round off our IPL betting for beginners tutorial with our best free IPL cricket betting tips in terms of what to look out for.
Generally, IPL teams perform better at home than they do away because of (home) crowd support and greater knowledgeable of playing at their own ground. That said, if a ground is very high scoring, it might also favour away teams who enjoy matches where lots of runs are scored (e.g. 180) as opposed to low scoring grounds where 140 is a par score.
Even though certain grounds will always have certain characteristics, the conditions on the day may vary. Eden Gardens is generally a ground where the wicket takes spin but on some days the ball might spin more than on others.
In some night games, dew plays a big factor and because there’s more dew later on, sides fielding second are at a disadvantage because the ball is harder to grip as a result of the moisture. A basic but logical IPL betting strategy is to back the side chasing if the dew factor is going to be very important.
What we said about dew above is important when captains winning the toss choose whether to bat first or bowl first. Long-term stats will paint a good picture about whether it’s better to bat first or second at a particular ground, so it pays to be aware of those numbers. The rule of thumb though, is that the captain winning the toss is automatically in a strong position.
Form of each team
A hugely important factor. Being on a winning run breeds confidence and means players have greater belief in what they’re doing, are more relaxed and have tried and tested game tactics. The opposite of course is also true. When you’ve lost five in a row, players forget what they do need to do to get over the line and are more likely to panic.
The IPL is a team sport and more often than not the best team wins, rather than the team with the best individuals.
That said, some players are more important than others. The absence of a huge player like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma or David Warner will dent their team’s chances. Similarly, if a particular player is in excellent form with bat or ball, their team’s chances vastly improve. If Lasith Malinga has taken three wickets in each of his last four games, Mumbai’s chances of playing well next up will be decent because they can expect another big performance from him.
