Asia Cup 2012 logoThe Asian Cup cricket tournament kicked off on Sunday 12th March and India will face off with their neighboring rivals in the form of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and arch rivals Pakistan. It is essential for the Indian cricket team to perform well and walk away as champions, as they are coming of a disastrous tour in Australia and need to give their fans something to cheer about.

Former Pakistan Legend, now turned commentator Wasim Akram said “MS Dhoni and Co. will certainly look to overturn their topsy-turvy performance in the just-concluded CB Series in Australia.”

India start as favorites as they are the world-champions and have a strong batting line-up. Captain MS Dhoni will have a lot to prove, because if India does not win this tournament, his captaincy will come under further scrutiny.

Sachin Tendulkar will once again be the center of attention as he focuses on getting his 100th international century. This has been a monkey on his back and his performance in the CB series was dismal. Many expect Sachin to get reach this milestone and then call it quits on his ODI career.

India will face stiff competition from both Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Lankan lions are playing some of their best cricket under the leadership of Mahela Jayawardene and Pakistan will be looking to put up a good performance after a poor showing against England.

Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Yuvaraj Singh are the three key players missing from this Indian squad and Zaheer’s absence will be felt the most, as the bowling department looks bare. India will have to rely on its spin bowlers to restrict the opposition batsmen on flat pitches that are full of runs.

India will play their first match, when they take on Sri Lanka on the 13th of March at Dhaka. The last time these two teams met, India thrashed the Lankans scoring 320 runs with more than 10 overs to spare. India will look to continue their domination against the Lankans and kick start their campaign with a convincing win.
