India has beaten Bangladesh in the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka. The hosts were unable to qualify for the final match that took place in Colombo today.

The Indian cricket team won the toss and opted to field, putting Bangladesh in to bat first. Bangladesh posted a score of 166/8 in 20 overs. India  ended the match with a total of 168/6.

Rohit Sharma had made 56 runs, making his 14th T20I half century off of 35 balls before being removed by Nazmul Islam. At that stage, India had needed another 69 runs off of 40 balls. Vijay Shankar was sent in to bat ahead of Dinesh Karthik.

There was still a doubt as to whether India could win when Karthik came to bat.

India Wins on a Six from Karthik

Vijay Shankar was removed after just 17 runs in his first international cricket innings. Shankar was removed when India had reached 162/6, needing just five runs to beat Bangladesh. Shankar had hit a four before he was dismissed by Bangladesh’s Soumya Sarkar.

Dinesh Karthik, who had replaced Manish Pandey at the bat, started out with a six. The first six was followed by a four and then another six.

While Shankar had made 12 runs off of 15 balls, Karthik came in and reached a total of 16 for 3 balls. India needed five more runs to win. The last over was already an exciting one with Karthik’s incredible batting.

The Indian team made a four wicket win when Karthik hit yet another six! The batsman and wicketkeeper had made a total of 29 runs off of eight balls during his short time at the bat.

It was certainly a sensational and unexpected finish to the Nidahas Trophy tri-nation tournament.  Although India had been the favourites when the match began, it had certainly appeared that Bangladesh was about to take the title. After the final winning six was hit, the Indian team rushed out to hug Karthik as the team celebrated its victory.
