India Flatten West Indies in Visakhapatnam

By Dhanu Delphi on December 19, 2019

India came into the second ODI 1-0 down in the three match ODI series and needed to win to keep the series alive. The men in blue did exactly that as they put in a fantastic performance with both bat and ball. The convincing 107 run win meant they levelled the series 1-1.

The third and final ODI will take place at Cuttack on Sunday, December 22. India go in as the betting favourites again with odds of 1.23. West Indies go in with odds of 4.05.

Sharma, Rahul Fire For Team India

The West Indies won the toss and went with their trusted formula of asking India to bat first. However, this time around it backfired. India’s opening batsmen were in pristine form and put together a 227 run stand that took the game away.

KL Rahul took the lead and played freely while Rohit Sharma played more cautiously early on. Rahul has matured during this West Indies series and finished with 102 from 104 balls. Sharma, who is known to make big hundreds, once again showed why he is one of the most dangerous batsmen in the world.

With Kohli departing for a rare duck, Sharma ploughed on and scored 159 off 138 balls. He set the platform for Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant to come and play their shots freely as they looked to push India past the 300 mark. Iyer made 53 from 32 balls and Pant made 39 from 16 balls as India piled up 387.

Yadav Takes Hat-trick

India suffered in the first ODI because they had four specialist bowlers. Shivam Dube went for runs as he tried to play the role of the 5th bowler. The selectors dropped Dube and brought in Shardul Thakur for the second ODI and it worked out well.

The West Indies had to score at over 7 runs per over and they got off to a reasonable start before Thakur removed Lewis for 30. S Iyer they came up with a brilliant piece of fielding to get rid of the dangerous Shimron Hetmyer. Shai Hope (78) and Nicholas Pooran (75) kept the West Indies in the game but Mohammad Shami came on and took 2 wickets in 2 balls to put the West Indies under pressure.

Kuldeep Yadav went on to take his second hat-trick in ODI cricket after he scalped the wickets of Hope, Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph to seal the victory for India. The West Indies could only manage to get to 280 as they were bowled out in the 44th over.

The bowlers did reasonably well and were helped by the fact that they had a huge total to defend. It is quite likely that India will field the same playing eleven at Cuttack and will once again depend heavily on their batsmen to give them the edge.

Kohli Will Want To Finish 2019 Strong

Virat Kohli is India’s most consistent batsman in all formats of the game. The Indian captain has failed in the first two ODI’s and is due for a big score. He will want to lead from the front and play a big innings in what will be India’s final ODI of 2019.

Kohli will also want to win the series and help India finish 2019 on a winning note.
