India On Course For T20 Series Whitewash Win Over The West Indies
The sportsbooks had the India T20 side as favourites in their series against the West Indies. The men in blue did not disappoint cricket bettors, either. They won the first two T20 matches in the three match series to secure another overseas T20 series win on 4th August. India will now look to wrap up the series with a 3-0 whitewash.
Rain played a factor in the second T20 game as the D/L method had to be brought into play. However, India were clearly in front and they ended up winning the game by 22 runs.
The West Indies are the underdogs for the 3rd T20, which will be played on 6 August at Providence. West Indies have odds of 2.53 according to the bookies, while the India T20 side have odds of 1.52.
Rohit Sharma Shows The Way
Rohit Sharma was the best Indian batsmen at the 2019 ICC World Cup, scoring 5 centuries in the tournament. He continued that good form in the T20 series. Furthermore, he did not let any of the rumours of him and captain Virat Kohli falling out impact his batting form.
The first T20 game was a low scoring encounter and Sharma finished as the top scorer for India. He took charge of the game in the second T20. He then made an impressive 67 off 51 balls in the first innings to give the innings momentum. His stability at the top of the order has more or less covered the brittle middle-order yet again.
Risbabh Pant has been a failure in both innings. Meanwhile, Manish Pandey has got starts but ultimately failed to carry on. India has been helped out in both innings by some late order heroics from the lower order. Notably, Ravindra Jadeja and Krunal Pandya have made some useful contributions down the order.
Kohli had not been himself throughout the World Cup and found it hard to convert his starts. He will be pleased that India have secured the T20 series, though. Kohli will now be looking to get back into the groove of making those big hundreds in all forms of the game.
Bowlers Continue To Do Well For India T20 Side
India can take some credit for this series win. However, the fact remains that the West Indies continue to be very inconsistent with their cricket. They have a bunch of talented players. Still, a lack of temperament coupled with a lack of application has made it easy for India to win the T20 series.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar has led the attack well with the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. Meanwhile, the rest of the bowlers have chipped in well. In the first T20, Navdeep Saini who made his debut bowled impressively taking 3 wickets to swing the game India’s way. He subsequently received the man of the match award.
In the second T20, it was the turn of Krunal Pandya to star with the ball after he chipped in with 20 valuable runs down the order. Pandya picked up 2 crucial of Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell just as they looked to take the game away from India. Together with Jadeja, the two spinners have bowled really well in the first two T20 games. They have also shown that they can hold their own in the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.
It will be interesting to see what team head coach Ravi Shastri and Kohli decide to field for the 3rd T20 game. They have a chance to experiment with some of the younger players on the bench and give them some match time. However, India could play the same side again. That way they can look to win 3-0 and take the winning momentum into the ODI series, which starts on 8 August.
