India and England are about to embark on a five-Test series played over six weeks. As would be expected, each team has its reasons for wanting to win the Test series.
India do not have a good track record when it comes to playing Test matches in England. Although India is the top Test team in the world, their performance in India is far from the top. India has played 17 Test series in England over the past 86 years. Out of the 17 Tests, India won only six.
The first Test takes place at Edgbaston in Birmingham. In lost all the Tests they have played at Edgbaston, except one that ended in a draw back in 1986. The majority of India’s Test wins have been played at home.
Will India Win Under Virat Kohli?
Aakash Chopra, the former India opener, commented on Virat Kohli’s performance. He noted that the captain does not have to prover anything to the rest of the world. However, it would be a huge step forward if Kohli could show that he is the best batsman by scoring big in England.
Chopra pointed out: “If Virat is in good form, it will have a huge impact on the rest of the team. The others also have to co come good, but Virat doing well will be critical to India’s success in England. If Virat doesn’t do well as a batsman, things can go south very quickly. Virat’s batting form will have a big impact on how India does on this tour.”
Whether India wins or not, the team will maintain its ranking as the number one Test team. England currently stand in fifth place, after winning only one out of their last nine Tests.
Kohli noted: “We’re pretty confident of our abilities, that we have the skillset, the character, and the mental toughness that is required to compete and win in overseas conditions.”
“The only way to look at it is to be optimistic and look forward to tough situations, which we are,” said the skipper.
