India Weekend Race Preview – 15 December, 2019

By Dhanu Delphi on December 15, 2019

As we reach the halfway point in December, weekend horse race continues unabated at the Mahalaxmi Race Course in Mumbai. On 15th December, there are 8 horse races on the cards, out of which we have chosen two of the most intriguing contests for our preview. This week, we have a Grade 3 one-mile race and a Class 2 sprint to look at.

Without further ado, here are our predictions for these races:

The Shantidas Askuran Trophy

Horses rated between 60 and 86 headline the fifth event of the day, a 1000m Class 2 horse race. With INR 525,000 at stake, this is one of the bigger races on Sunday. Six horses have been signed up for this race. The race has a scheduled starting time of 03:30 PM. The field has four geldings and a couple of fillies, with no colts. All the horses are aged 5 years or under.

Watch out for these three horses in this event:

Flaming Martini – Hailing from the stables of trainer Dallas Todywalla, this one is a 4-year-old bay filly. Sired by Excellent Art (GB), she has a rating of 76 after 11 races. So far, Flaming Martini has 3 wins with another 5 in second and 3 in the third position. Her last five races have ended in the top 3, with a run that goes 2-3-2-2-2.  Nathan Evans will be in the saddle on Sunday.

King Khalil – A dark brown gelding from the stables of trainer Deepesh Narredu, this 4-year-old has a rating of 72. With 8 races under his belt, he has 4 wins and a solitary third-place finish. He has scored a couple of wins in his last 5 races – 1-1-4-3-6. He was sired by Multidimensional (IRE) off dam Khalila (USA). P Vinod will hold his reins on Sunday.

Between The Waters – Trained by Rajesh Monga, this bay gelding is the son of Surfrider (IRE) and Althing (USA). He is currently on a decent winning run of two, with the recent record of 2-5-2-1-1 in his last five races. With a rating of 68, he will be one to watch in this race. Neeraj Rawal will be his jockey in this race.

Our Picks

King Khalil is our top choice if the odds makers start listing at 5/1 or longer odds, with Flaming Martini also another good option. As a long-shot pick, we suggest Between The Waters.

 The A C Ardeshir Trophy

The seventh horse race of the day has a distance of one mile. This one is a Grade 3 event with 5 horses above the triple-digit rating in the field. With INR 1000,000 at stake, this is the biggest race of the day. It will start at 4:30 PM. These are the top choices in our books for this race:

La Rondine – With a top rating of 106, the daughter of Kingda Ka (AUS) and Rahy’s Serenade (USA) is bound to be the tote favorite in this event. Trained by Vishal Gaikwad, the 4-year-old bay filly has four wins from 10 starts. Her recent record over the last 5 races looks like this – 1-5-4-1-3. S Zervan will ride her in the race.

Raees – Sired by Sedgefield off dam Lost Perfection (USA) this is a 6-year-old bay gelding from the stables of Imtiaz Sait. He has a rating of 105 for this event. He is one shy of 30 races right now and has scored 9 wins so far, with another 14 finishes in the top 4. A Sandesh is scheduled to race him on Sunday.

Costa Brava – This one is a 5-year-old bay gelding trained by P Shroff. Sired by Phoenix Tower (USA) off dam Karakorum Splendor (USA), he has 10 top-two finishes out of 12 races, with 5 wins. His recent record is also quite impressive – 2-1-2-2-4. P Trevor will be his jockey on Sunday.

Our Picks

La Rondine is our choice for the top pick if the bookies begin listing at 5/1 or longer odds, with Costa Brava a worthy contender. Raees is a safe choice for a long-shot pick.
