India Blow West Indies Away In First Test As Rahane And Bumrah Shine
India entered the first test against the West Indies as the cricket betting favourites. The West Indies have been unable to win a single game during the T20 and ODI series. India were playing at full strength as all of their test superstars were fit and in decent form. They won the first test by 318 runs as they continued to establish their dominance over the West Indies. This India v West Indies first test wasn’t close.
Tail Helps India Get Decent First Innings Score In India v West Indies First Test
India were sent into bat and were in trouble as they lost their first three wickets quickly. Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, who was under pressure, top scored with 81. He held the middle-order together and took India close to the 200 mark. The West Indies should have bowled India out cheaply. But they allowed Ravindra Jadeja (58) to form partnerships with the tail and get India to a respectable score of 297.
Sharma Takes Five
The West Indies had a steady start but they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Ishant Sharma bowled with a lot of heart and got the breakthrough whenever his skipper needed a wicket. He picked up two crucial catches of his own bowling and broke the back of the middle-order taking the wickets of Roston Chase, Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer. He finished with five scalps and restricted the West Indies to 222.
Rahane Hits Much Needed Century
India were on top in the second innings as the pressure was off them, but the top three batsmen did not take advantage of the situation. Virat Kohli (51) put together a 100 run partnership with Rahane who would go on to score a much needed century. Rahane (102) formed another century run partnership with Hanuma Vihari (93) and gave India a lead of 418 before Kohli declared
Rahane will be very pleased with this century as they were question marks over his place in the side given his lack of runs for the last couple of years. However, Kohli backed him before the start of the test series. He came good for his captain and his team, going on to win the Man of the Match award.
J Bumrah Bowls Magnificent Spell
Chasing a total in excess of 400 in the second innings is a tall task for the best of teams. No one expected the West Indies to chase down the runs, but their fans would have expected them to fight. Sadly, the West Indies folded like a pack of cards and could only manage 100 runs in the second innings, thanks to some fiery bowling by the Indian fast bowlers. The only resistance from the West Indies came through Kemar Roach, who top scored with 38, hitting 5 sixes and 1 four.
Jasprit Bumrah bowled well in the first innings. However, he could only pick up one wicket as Sharma was the one doing all the damage. However, he bowled with a lot of pace and swing in the second innings which sparked a West Indies collapse.
Bumrah also picked up five wickets and was the pick of the bowlers in the second innings. Sharma was not far, behind taking three wickets to have an outstanding match. Mohammed Shami chipped in with 2.
