The third of five One Day International matches was played between India and Sri Lanka in Pallekele. The Indian team were close to reaching their target when play was stopped after Sri Lankan fans began to throw bottles onto the field.

Sri Lanka ended the match on 217/9 in 50 overs in which Thirimanne made a total of 80, and Chandimal managed 36. India reached a total of 218/4 in 45.1 overs with Rohit Sharma reaching 124 not out, and MS Dhoni ending on 67 not out. India won the game by six wickets, and won the series with three straight wins and two games to go.

Dhoni Rests on Field While Match Stopped

When the match was stopped close to the end, MS Dhoni decided to take a nap on the field. Play was stopped for over half an hour while the authorities dealt with the unruly fans. There were a number of Tweets about Dhoni’s nap as Twitter users were much amused by his good use of the down time.

India needed just eight more runs to win when the disturbance caused the delay.

Sri Lankan fans have once again been disappointed with yet another loss against India. Out of the last nine series that have been played between the two teams, India has won eight bilateral series (seven of them in a row) against Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka drew the series in 2000.

Man of the Match – Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah was named Man of the Match. He bowled well, taking 5/27.

Bumrah noted: “It’s always good when you get a break so you can work on your strengths and be refreshed when you come back. This was a different wicket. In the last match, it was slot, but in this match, there was a seam movement with the new ball. When you contribute to the team’s success, it’s always a good feeling.”
