India Horse Racing Preview – 18 August, 2019
Indian Monsoon racing action continues at the Hyderabad Race Club on Sunday, August 18th. This is the ninth race day of the 2019 season and it will feature seven races. The race card includes everything from a maiden race, to Classes 2-5, and the main feature, the Governor’s Cup. As usual, we will be covering two of the most exciting races as part of our ongoing Indian horse racing preview coverage here. Without further ado, let’s get down to it then with the latest news:
1. The Deccan Queen Plate
With a total prize purse of INR 900,000 (GBP 10,400), this maiden race is one of the most anticipated events among the punters at Hyderabad. This one is open to fillies and colts in the three-year age category. At 1200m, it is a relatively short sprint with a field of 10 horses. Most of the contenders have had at least a couple of starts under their belt. This is the first race of the day.
Here are our picks for this one:
A bay filly born out of the union between Burden of Proof (IRE) and Flamingo Fan (USA), she scored an impressive third place in her last race. Coming from the stables of trainer S Prasad Raju, she will have jockey KSV Prasad Raju in the saddle on Sunday.
This one is another bay filly sired by the famous Multidimensional (IRE) off dam Brushed Aside (GB). Her last two races ended 4-3 respectively, and she will have many admirers on Sunday. Trained by LVR Deshmukh, Moskova will be piloted by the very experienced Suraj Narredu in this race.
The third filly in our top three comes from the loins of Air Support (USA) with Apparition as her dam. She is one of the few horses here with three races completed already. While the first two ended with her in the ninth spot, she impressed in the last one, finishing third. Trained by Srinivas Reddy, this filly will have the in-form jockey S Zervan riding her on Sunday.
Our Indian Horse Racing Preview Picks
If the odds makers start listing at 5/1, Moskova gets our vote of confidence for the win, with Original Temptress expected to put up a fight. Flamingo Flame has the potential to land an upset and is our long-shot pick.
2. The Governor’s Cup
The sixth race of the day, this one incidentally has the same number of horses in it as well. It is a term race open to all horses above the age of three years. It is a medium distance race at 1600m. The prize purse in this one is identical to the Deccan Queen Plate. Looking at the race card for this Indian horse racing preview, there is no doubt as to who the tote favourite is going to be. Let’s take a closer look:
The four-year colt is a progeny of Excellent Art (GB) off dam Miss Danehill (IRE). With five wins and six top-four placings out of 14 runs, he has had an impressive start to his career. But he is without a win since February 2019 and the Governor’s Cup looks like the event where he could break this rut. Trainer by LD Silva, Corfe Castle will have Akshay Kumar as his jockey on Sunday.
Sired by Dancing Forever (USA) off Farha (USA), this chestnut mare has eight wins out of 27 races, with another 12 finishes in the top four. She comes from the stables of trainer K Satheesh. Nakhat Singh will be her jockey in this race.
That’s My Class
This dark brown gelding is the progeny of Top Class (USA) and Bella. Trained by SSF Hassan, he has finished in the top four an impressive 23 times out of 29 runs, with four wins. A very consistent performer, this five-year-old will have jockey Asshad Abar holding the reins in this race on Sunday.
Our Indian Horse Racing Preview Picks
Corfe Castle is the overwhelming favorite in this race as long as the bookmakers start listing at 5/1. Out of the rest, That’s My Class is the safe choice for number two. Like Wise is the popular choice to cause an upset and is our long-shot choice.
