The 2018 Nidahas Trophy tri-nation cricket series was played in Sri Lanka to celebrate the country’s 70’s year of independence. It was disappointing for Sri Lanka that its own team did not end up in the final. The other two participating teams, India and Bangladesh, played against each other, with a win from India.
The semi-final match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh had ended on a somewhat controversial note. There had been a number of heated discussions on the field, leaving a bitter aftertaste for the hosts. Sri Lanka fans decided that they would come and support India in the final match against Bangladesh.
India Team Carries Sri Lanka Flag in Victory Lap
When India won the final of the Nidahas Trophy, Sri Lankan fans cheered and joined in the celebrations of the visiting team.
Rohit Sharma, the India skipper for the Nidahas Trophy, carried the Sri Lankan flag for part of a victory lap. The team wanted to thank the supportive Sri Lankan crowd who had clearly been on their side throughout the match.
Rohit Sharma commented on the final game: “It was a brilliant game, brilliant for the crowd who have come out in numbers. The support we got there from this crowd was brilliant. It would be a bit different if we were playing Sri Lanka, but I would like to thank them for their show tonight.”
The final had an exciting finish when Dinesh Karthik came in to bat. He began by hitting two sixes and a four. Soon after, he hit another four. India needed another five runs to win the series, and Karthik delivered the runs in a single six. He made 29 runs off of eight balls to take India to a win.
Sharma Tweeted: “Incredible end to what had been such a great season. What a way to pull off a victory. Magnificent from the entire unit.”
