BCCI Confirms IPL 2020 Auction For December 19 In Kolkata

By Dhanu Delphi on October 1, 2019

The BCCI has confirmed that the IPL 2020 auction will take place on December 19 in Kolkata. The change in venue comes as a bit of a surprise as the IPL auction usually takes place in Bengaluru.

Final Small IPL 2020 Auction

The last IPL auction took place in January 2018. Back then, the rules allowed the IPL franchises to retain 5 players and build a new squad via the auction. The December 2019 auction will be on a small scale. It will also be the final auction before a mega auction takes place in 2021. IPL cricket franchises will have to scrap their teams and look to build new teams by buying players during the mega auction.

The BCCI has already informed the 8 participating IPL franchises that the trading window closes on November 14. Each franchise was given a budget of 85 crore rupees ($12 million) to shortlist players and finalize their teams for IPL 2020. Apart from this budget, teams were also given an extra 3 crore rupees ($425,000). This is in addition to whatever balance cash they have remaining from the last auction.

IPL Franchises: What’s Left In The Purse

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have struggled in the last two IPL seasons, even though they have spent heavily to pack their team with some of the best players in the world. RCB have the lowest purse for this small auction with only 1.8 crores left. The franchise with the second lowest purse are the Mumbai Indians who have 3.05 crores to spend. The Mumbai Indians are the defending champions. They will not be looking to make any major changes to a winning team during the small auction.

The team that has the highest purse is the Delhi Capitals, who have 8.2 crores to spend. The Capitals did well in IPL 2019 under the leadership of young Shreyas Iyer. They will be looking to strengthen their team and bring in more firepower into the squad for IPL 2020. The team with the second highest purse is the Rajasthan Royals who have 7.15 crores left. The Royals need to use their money wisely and go after marquee players who can take the team to the next level.

Although MS Dhoni has made himself unavailable for T20 cricket at the international level, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) owners have confirmed that Dhoni will lead CSK once again at IPL 2020. CSK has a purse of 3.2 crores to spend. It will be interesting to see which players they go after. Dhoni is very selective with who he lets into the squad. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) is also expected to bring in a couple of big players. They have a purse of 6.05 crores left to spend.

The two other remaining teams are Kings XI Punjab, who have 3.7 crores in their purse. Next are Sunrisers Hyderabad, who have 5.3 crores left. There were rumours that Kings XI owners were planning to get rid of their captain Ravichandran Ashwin and get someone new to captain the squad. They don’t have a lot of money to go after a marquee player. So, it will be interesting to see how they approach things in the small auction. Sunrisers Hyderabad have a strong lineup, but they could strengthen their team further. This is especially if they decide to go after domestic players.

Big Pay Day For Domestic Players

One thing is certain that before the end of 2019, a number of players are going to have a massive pay day. This small auction could change the lives of a number of domestic players who are currently playing in the Vijay Hazare ODI tournament. IPL franchise spotters are keeping a close watch on players who put in a great performance with either bat or ball. These players could earn a lot of money during the coming IPL auction.
