Kings XI Punjab Remove R Ashwin As Captain And Also Decide To Get Rid Of Him
It’s fair to say R Ashwin isn’t having a great time right now after Kings XI Punjab removed him. He went to the West Indies as the number one spinner in the side and was passed over for both the test matches.
R Jadeja took his place in the first test and did well. He was later automatically selected for the second test. While ex-players like Sunil Gavaskar called R Ashwin’s omission as ‘astonishing’, Virat Kohli explained it away with a horse for courses line.
Kings XI Remove R Ashwin As Captain
The Indian team has made their way home and R Ashwin will be aware that Kings XI Punjab has decided to remove him as captain. Kings XI bought R Ashwin for a whopping 7.6 crore rupees in 2018 and appointed him as captain. Ashwin captained Kings XI for the last two IPL seasons and had a record of leading the side in 28 games, winning 12 and losing 16.
Kings XI haven’t done well under R Ashwin and have decided to make major changes ahead of the 2020 IPL. The management have sacked their entire coaching staff and it looks like R Ashwin has also got the boot. Their new head coach is Kiwi Mike Hesson who appears to favour KL Rahul as the new captain.
Kings XI Ready To Trade R Ashwin
It appears that R Ashwin will not only be stripped of the Kings XI captaincy but the franchise is also ready to let him go. The Delhi Capitals are looking at bringing in R Ashwin according to reports. They are reportedly willing to buy him out in an all-cash deal – which will technically be termed as a trade.
If this turns out to be the case, R Ashwin will not end up losing any money if the Capitals pay the same price. However, it is rather unlikely that R Ashwin will end up captaining the Delhi Capitals as they had a good season in 2019 under the leadership of young S Iyer. This will be another blow to Ashwin’s ego and it isn’t going to help his confidence.
Ego or Personality Causing Problems?
Once the premier spinner in all forms of the game, R Ashwin’s decline started when his relationship with MS Dhoni started to sour. At that point in time, Dhoni was captaining India and also the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise where R Ashwin was the main spinner.
The strained relationship saw R Ashwin fall from grace. In the ODI and T20 formats, Ashwin passed over for younger spinners. R Ashwin ended up losing his place in the shorter formats of the game and became India’s top test spinner.
His fall out with Virat Kohli in the 2019 IPL once again saw R Ashwin being looked over for the test match series in the West Indies. While neither Dhoni, Kohli or R Ashwin will admit that their relationship has soured, it is clear to see that R Ashwin isn’t in their good books anymore.
Ashwin’s decisions and tactics have received flak over the years, largely thanks to his strong personality and outspokenness. Ashwin created quite a controversy in the 2019 IPL due to his mankad of J Butler that helped Kings XI win a very close game. R Ashwin received criticism from a number of prominent players including Shane Warne who called his actions ‘disgraceful’ and termed him an ‘embarrassment’ to the game.
The sad thing about R Ashwin is that his record in playing for India and the IPL is good but it is his personality and ego that is causing him problems!
