Kiwis Betting Odds After Exciting Win Over South Africa

By Dhanu Delphi on June 21, 2019

Following their thrilling victory over South Africa, the Kiwi betting odds at the 2019 World Cup have have received a huge boost.

Leading into the 2019 ICC World Cup, all eyes were on the England, India and Australia as the three big guns were the favourites with the bookies at the start of the tournament. Needless to say, they all continue to favourites to make it into the semi-finals at least.

England (2.80) and Australia (3.50) have lost just one game at the World Cup.  In the meantime, India (3.00) are yet to drop a match. However, if you are a cricket bettor willing to back a dark horse to win this World Cup, then you might want to put your money on New Zealand. Especially as the Kiwi betting odds are currently set at an alluring 6-1.

South Africa Lose To New Zealand – Yet Again

The Kiwis were the ones who eliminated South Africa at the 2015 World Cup. Proteas fans were subsequently hoping that Faf du Plessis and his team could get their act together and beat New Zealand at the 2019 World Cup.

South Africa were sent into bat and were immediately in trouble after Quinton de Kock fell early and Hashim Amla continued to struggle. The veteran batsman made 55, but at a strike rate of 66 which gave the innings no momentum. The other batsman also struggled. Only Rassie van der Dussen played freely and remained unbeaten with 67 at a strike rate of 104. The South Africans set the Kiwis a total of just 241.

The Kiwis lost Colin Munro early, and then Chris Morris picked up three quick wickets. This gave South Africa a great chance at victory. New Zealand were reeling at 137 for 5 in the 33rd over with captain Kane Williamson anchoring the innings. Kane Williamson and Colin de Grandhomme looked to rebuild the innings. Furthermore, Proteas made it easy for them by dropping catches, missing a run-out opportunity and not taking a crucial review that would have dismissed Williamson.

Williamson played a captain’s innings and remained unbeaten on 106 that earned him the man of the match award. However, it was the power hitting of de Grandhomme (60) that helped the Kiwis get over the line. He hit 5 fours and 2 sixes at a strike rate of 127.65.

South Africa came so close yet again only to fall short to the Kiwis yet again. Their chances of making it to the final four are all but over.

Kiwi Betting Odds of 6-1 Tempting

This win will give New Zealand a lot of confidence and will definitely boost their betting odds of winning. The Kiwi betting odds are currently set at 6-1 when it comes to winning their first World Cup. So if you are a Kiwi fan or like backing a dark horse, this is a good time to bet on New Zealand.

New Zealand – Could Win First World Cup

New Zealand have a bunch of great players who have the ability to win a game on their own. The openers, Munro and Martin Guptill are not very consistent. However, on their day they can destroy any attack and score extremely quick.

Kane Williamson is all class and the fact that he is in good nick is yet another reason to bet on the Kiwis. The experienced Ross Taylor and Tom Latham bring solidity to the middle-order. Meanwhile, the lower order is strengthened with power hitters in de Grandhomme and James Neesham.

The surprise package for the Kiwis at this World Cup has been their bowling. While everyone expected Trent Boult to lead the attack, Lockie Ferguson has been amongst the wickets and now sits fourth on the leading wicket taker list with 11 in 4 games. Mohammed Amir of Pakistan leads the list at the moment with 13 wickets. Matt Henry has also been hard to play with his pace and swing.

The next real test for New Zealand will come when they play the West Indies on June 22. A convincing win of the Caribbean Kings will definitely put New Zealand amongst the top four teams to win the World Cup!
