Dhoni, Test Captains To Provide Commentary For Day-Night Test Match
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is happy to see that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is finally moving forward with plans to host its inaugural day-night test match against Bangladesh.
The ICC initially put forward the idea of day-night test matches in order to revive the five-day format. Also, they want to create more interest in the game. The BCCI resisted the push to play day-night test matches. But all that changed when former captain Sourav Ganguly took over the role of BCCI President.
The first day-night test in India will take place at the iconic Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata. This will be the second test and final test in the two-match test series between India and Bangladesh. This is scheduled to take place between November 22 to 26.
Star Has Special Plans For Day-Night Test
Host broadcaster Star has special plans to celebrate the inaugural day-night test match. Star has sent a letter to the BCCI requesting them to grant permission to have a number of ex-test captains don the commentary hat and share their thoughts on playing day-night test cricket. The likes of Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni are expected to provide guest commentary during the first two days of the test match.
The plan is to have all of the former test captains be present before the start of the match. They will join Virat Kohli and Team India during the National Anthems and then move over to the commentary box to not only share their views on pink ball cricket but to also relive some special memories involving test matches that they have played in over the years.
These special memories will be recorded and the broadcaster plans to play them during Day 4 and Day 5. These special clips will be played on TV as well as on the big screens at the ground. Star will also have veterans V.V.S Laxman and Harbhajan Singh take fans down memory lane and talk about the memorable test match at Eden Gardens during 2001 against Australia.
Fans Will Be Eager To Hear From MS Dhoni
Indian cricket fans will be eager to hear from all former test captains. They especially want to hear from MS Dhoni, who will be doing his first guest commentary stint. MS Dhoni has disappeared from the public eye after the 2019 ICC World Cup. The former test captain only plays the shorter format of the game these days. However, Dhoni made himself unavailable for selection during the recent ODI and T20 series at home.
There continues to be a lot of speculation over MS Dhoni’s future and his retirement. However, the man himself has chosen to remain silent and has refused to address any of the retirement rumours. It will be refreshing for fans to hear from MS Dhoni as he is generally pretty straightforward with his answers. Dhoni fans will want to know if he plans on playing the T20 World Cup which takes place next year and whether he will be visiting the commentary box more often once he retires from international cricket.
Star Will Also Telecast Training Sessions
Star has also decided to telecast the training session of the Indian cricket team on the eve of the test match. This will be the first time that Star focuses on a training session ahead of a home test. There is a lot of buzz ahead of the first day-night test match. Star wants to let fans see how the Indian cricket team are preparing and training with the pink ball.
Fans that are making their way to Eden Gardens will be allowed free entry to watch the training session. The broadcaster will also do small clips where fans get to interact with ex-test captains and the same will be played on the big screen and broadcasted to viewers at home.
