India and Sri Lanka played the fourth match of the current One Day International series. The game held special importance for India because the former skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, had reached his 300th ODI match.
Indian Team Wins by 168 Runs
The Indian team has already won the series after having beaten Sri Lanka in the first three out of five games. India went into the game with a plan to win again in order to help Dhoni celebrate his 300th ODI. The team did not disappoint, setting a run total of 375/5 in 50 overs. Sri Lanka managed 207/10 in 42.4 overs, resulting in a 168-run lead for India. Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma scored centuries in this match.
MS Dhoni ended the match with an unbeaten 49 off 42 as part of India’s total of 375 runs. This was Dhoni’s 73rd not out innings in an ODI match, and has now beaten his own record in this regard.
Kohli Shares Emotional Words
Virat Kohli, the current India team captain, presented Dhoni with a specially designed silver cricket bat to mark the occasion. It was an emotional Kohli told the former skipper, Dhoni: “What do I say? Ninety percent of us started our career under you. It is an honour to give this memento to you. And you will always be our captain.”
Dhoni has now joined five other top Indian players who have also reached the 300 ODI mark. He is certainly in good company with Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Mohammed Azharuddin, and Yuvraj Singh.
MS Dhoni has been playing matches against Sri Lanka each time he has reached another hundred One Day International matches. He has now celebrated 100, 200 and 300 matches while playing against the same team.
Dhoni also currently holds a record of 99 ODI stumpings. He shares this record with Kumar Sangakkara, a Sri Lankan player.
