All-rounder Kieron Pollard helped secure a Mumbai Indians victory after beating the Chennai Super Kings in the match at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This was Chennai Super Kings’ first defeat in the Indian Premier League 2019.

Chennai Super Kings won the toss, and elected to bowl first. This gave the Mumbai Indians the task of setting the run target. Mumbai Indians set a respectable 171 run target, ending the match on 170/5 in 20 overs. Chennai Super Kings struggled as Mumbai Indians picked off their players.

Kieron’s Contribution

Lasith Malinga bowled to Shane Watson, with Kieron Pollard making the catch. This was Malinga’s first big wicket since the IPL began. Before dismissal, Chennai Super Kings’ Watson made only five runs. Kieron caught the ball safely with both hands.

Ambati Rayudu, the other opener for Chennai Super Kings, was out for a duck, bowled by Jason Behrendorff. Quinton de Kock took an easy catch.

Suresh Raina was next to bat, making 16 runs before Pollard caught him out in an acrobatic catch. It looked as if Raina would make a bit hit until Pollard appeared, jumped up, and did a one-handed catch. Pollard fell to the ground with the ball clutched firmly in his hand. It is not every day that IPL viewers catch a spot of gymnastics on the field!

When it came to batting, Kieron made 17 runs, not out, off of seven balls. His short time at the bat included two sixes before the end of the final over.

Man of the Match to Hardik Pandya

Despite Kieron Pollard’s contribution, Hardik Pandya made Man of the Match. Pandya added 25 runs, not out, in eight balls. His short time at the bat saw three sixes and one four.

Pandya also dismissed three players while bowling. He dismissed MS Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings skipper at 12 runs. He also restricted Ravindra Jadeja to one run, and Deepak Chahar to seven runs. Pandya dedicated the Man of the Match win to his family and friends.

Mumbai Indians Victory & Skipper Comments

The Mumbai Indians had a rough start, losing two games at the beginning of the tournament. He explained that winning early games takes the stress off the need to win games at the end. Sharma praised his team, noting that the Pandya bothers consistently play well.
