The Delhi Daredevils have a new team captain for the rest of this year’s Indian Premier League. Gautam Gambhir has decided to step down following poor performance so far in the 2018 IPL. Gambhir announced that he was stepping down as captain at a press conference on Wednesday.
Gambhir had previously played for the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he had played successfully. He moved over to the Delhi Daredevils at the start of this season.
Shreyas Iyer to Take Over as Delhi Daredevils Captain
At the news conference that took place in New Delhi, Gambhir said the following: “It was absolutely my decision. I haven’t contributed enough. So I owe that responsibility considering where we are in the points table.”
The Delhi Daredevils have won only one match out of the six they had played before Gambhir resigned. The team is in the eighth position in the points table. Gambhir has contributed very little. He has seen a dismal 85 in six matches, with an average of just 17 runs per match.
Shreyas Iyer has been announced as the new skipper for the Delhi Daredevils. He has confidence in the Delhi Daredevils, and is sure that they can get back in the game.
The new skipper commented: “I thank the management, coach and Gauti bhai (Gautam Gambhir). We have the potential to bounce back with eight games in hand. I really love the responsibility.
Delhi Daredevils Coach Comments
The Delhi Daredevils coach, Ricky Ponting, had only words of praise for Gambhir.
Ponting noted: “Gautam deserves a lot of credit for taking the decision. Something that may have been unheard of in Indian cricket. Really, the media should give him some credit for his decision.”
He further explained: “It shows great character as a leader to stand up and say that.”
