Virat Kohli Opens Up On Team Composition For Next T20 World Cup

The first T20 series between India and South Africa on Sunday in Dharamsala was abandoned without a match being bold due to heavy rain. This effectively makes it a two-match cricket series with the second T20 set to take place in Mohali on September 18.

Virat Kohli Looking At T20 World Cup

Captain Virat Kohli took the time to sit down with the media and discuss some of the issues and concerns surrounding the Indian team. When it comes to team composition, the big question was why did the selectors decide to leave out Y Chahal and K Yadav from the T20 series against South Africa.

Kohli explained the reasoning behind the move was to strengthen the lower order. While Chahal and Yadav have proven to be great bowlers in the shorter format of the game, their batting skills are not as strong as some of the other T20 squads going around.

Kohli said a lot of the current teams have good batsmen coming in at 9 and 10. The Indian team had to make a decision with the T20 World Cup coming up in 2020. India has around 30 T20 international matches before they enter the T20 World Cup and they want to use these matches to test some of the younger players who have proven themselves in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well as domestic T20 matches.

India has preferred to go with K Pandya, W Sundar and R Jadeja who can all handle use the long handle lower down the order. If these three clicks for India, it would effectively close the door on K Yadav and Y Chahal for the coming World Cup.

India Will Experiment With New Faces

Kohli has also made it clear that the selectors will be using the next few T20 series to experiment with different players and give youngsters a chance at the international level. The Indian captain is excited to bring in new blood to the squad and try out different combinations.

The fact that Kohli was open about the new selection process for the upcoming T20 World Cup will give the younger generation a lot of encouragement and impetus to fight for a place in the squad. At the same time, it is also going to put a lot of pressure on some of the older players as they know they cannot take their places for granted in the squad.

The remaining two T20 games against South Africa will be another opportunity for some of the fast bowlers to cement their place in the squad. N Saini, K Ahmed, and D Chahar are fighting for the top spot. Meanwhile, J Bumrah and B Kumar should be an automatic choice for the next T20 World Cup.

Kohli Clarifies Status of MS Dhoni

Virat Kohli got social media buzzing last week when he suddenly posted a picture of MS Dhoni on Instagram and praised him. Social media came to the conclusion that Dhoni had decided to call it a day and it was Kohli’s tribute to Dhoni.

While MS Dhoni has continued to remain silent and stay away from the media. His wife Sakshi decided to take to Twitter and put things to rest by saying it was nothing but rumors. MS Dhoni hasn’t yet been selected for the T20 series against South Africa. The selectors have no idea whether he wants to continue playing or call it a day.

Kohli did clarify that he meant nothing by the Instagram post and continued to back MS Dhoni. The Indian captain said that retirement was Dhoni’s personal decision and as long as he remains available, he would continue to be an integral part in the Indian T20 side!
