India Favourites In First T20, But West Indies Better Betting Option

By Dhanu Delphi on August 2, 2019

India starts their tour of the West Indies with a three match T20 series along with the favourites tag. The first T20 will take place on 03 August at Lauderhill in Florida, USA and cricket bettors can find odds of 1.55 on India at the sportsbooks. Meanwhile, the West Indies cricket team have 2.47 odds.

India have played good cricket in all formats of the game. Hence they have better odds of winning with bookmakers, such as Bet365 and Betway. However if you are a T20 fan, then you will know that the West Indies have one of the most powerful and dangerous T20 squads in World Cricket.

We take a look at both squads for the T20 series and analyse their strengths and weaknesses. If you like taking calculated risks, then you should not write off the West Indies cricket team. It is highly likely that they will win at least one T20 game. Moreover, they could very well pull of a series victory.

West Indies Cricket Team: Too Much Firepower

The West Indies did not have a great outing at the 2019 World Cup and they will be eager to turn things around as they get to play their favourite format – T20 cricket. The West Indies will be bolstered by the return of T20 specialists Kieron Pollard and Sunil Narine. These players are two of the most sought after cricketers in T20 franchise cricket.

The West Indies been a dominant force in T20 cricket  for many years. That’s because they have a long list of players who are power hitters and can also send down a few tidy overs. Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Carlos Brathwaite and Khary Pierre are top all-rounders in the shorter format of the game.

West Indies have also a nice line-up of quality batsmen at the top of the order who are known to clear the boundary at will. John Campbell has been drafted into the side to open the innings. He will most likely be partnered with Evin Lewis or Sunil Narine.

The middle-order has the dynamic Nicholas Pooran who is only going to get better as he plays more games. Pooran is a naturally gifted batsman with all the shots in the game. If he gets going, the West Indies could subsequently notch up big totals. Shimron Hetmyer has promised big things but failed to deliver. He will therefore want to make the most of this opportunity to seal his place in the side.

The one area of weakness for the West Indies could be their lack of specialist bowlers. The West Indies depend heavily on their all-rounders to fire and if they go for runs, this could hurt their chances of winning.

India Cricket Team: Issues To Settle

The West Indies cricket team have strengthened their squad by bringing back Pollard and Narine. Meanwhile, India have decided to rest their key bowlers in Jasprit Bumarh, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. There is also no MS Dhoni in this side as he is taking a 2 month sabbatical.

India does have Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja in their side. Apart from these two, though, the rest of the bowlers are rather inexperienced. They will therefore have their work cut out against a power packed West Indies side. Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar, Rahul Chahar, Navdeep Saini are the specialist bowlers in the squad.

India’s strength will be their batting as Shikhar Dhawan makes his return to the squad after injury to join Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. Manish Pandey and Rishabh Pant will likely fill the number 5 and 6 positions .

Even if India play to potential, it will still be a tough task for them to come out on the winning side!
