The group stage of the IPL 2020 is now left with just four matches in three days. Each team will be playing one match apiece. So far, Mumbai Indians are the only team to have qualified for the 2020 IPL Playoff. On the other hand, Chennai have been eliminated with just 10 points from 13 matches.

One among the Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore are sure to get a spot. Both DC and RCB will clash against each other. But the qualification spots of six teams for the play-off stage have not been decided. That will depend on lots of permutations and combinations.

2020 IPL Playoff: Qualification Possibilities for Teams

Mumbai Indians

Reigning champions are on a strong note to defend their title as they are through to Qualifiers with 18 points from 13 matches. The defending champions beat Delhi in their last match to seal a spot for Qualifiers. In their inconsequential match, they will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in Sharjah on Tuesday. Mumbai also have the best net run rate (NRR) of +1.296 among all the teams.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Bangalore have 14 points from 13 matches, but they are ahead of Delhi in the second spot with NRR of -0.145. However, their three consecutive defeats against Hyderabad, Mumbai and Chennai is a cause for concern for them. Bangalore will play Delhi in Abu Dhabi on Monday. A victory will seal them a spot in Qualifiers, but a loss can force them to wait for other results. In that case, they need at least two of three scenarios to happen. First, Kings XI Punjab and Hyderabad lose their respective matches, and Kolkata and Rajasthan don’t beat each other convincingly.

Delhi Capitals

Delhi at one time were on the top of points table before they hit a rough patch. Their nine-wicket defeat against Mumbai in their last match was their fourth in a row which left them in the third position. They have 14 points from 13 matches, but their NRR is now -0.159. A win over Bangalore in their last league match on Monday will surely move them to Qualifiers. But if they lose, Delhi have to pray that Punjab and Hyderabad also lose their matches, and either Kolkata or Rajasthan don’t win their last league match convincingly.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Kolkata have 12 points each. So, the battle for the third and fourth qualifying places is going to be more intense than the first two spots. Hyderabad have a tough match against table-toppers Mumbai in Sharjah on Tuesday. But they will be high on confidence since they have convincingly beaten Bangalore and Delhi in their last two matches. If Hyderabad win and Delhi lose in their respective matches, the former can qualify given they have beaten the latter twice. If Hyderabad lose, they will be knocked out of the tournament.

Kings XI Punjab – Can the Kings make it to the IPL Playoff?

Punjab’s five wins on the trot brought them back into the tournament. However, their defeat against Rajasthan on Friday left the race to Qualifiers quite wide open. They are scheduled to play their next match in Abu Dhabi on Sunday against Chennai. A loss will end Punjab’s campaign, but a win will keep them alive with 14 points. However, their qualification will depend on a lot of factors. Punjab beat Chennai and their NRR stays better than the loser of the Delhi-Bangalore match.

In the second scenario, Punjab win their match against  Chennai, Hyderabad loses to Mumbai, or the Kolkata and Rajasthan match is decided by a bare minimum margin that the winners don’t take over Punjab’s NRR. At present Punjab’s NRR (-0.133) is better than Rajasthan (-0.337) and Kolkata (-0.467).

Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan raised their hopes with convincing wins over Punjab and Mumbai in their last two matches. In their last league match in Dubai on Sunday, Rajasthan face Kolkata who were the winners in their previous clash. A win is necessary for Rajasthan to stay afloat or else they stand eliminated. But even in such a case, they have to wait for Punjab to lose to Chennai and Mumbai also beat Hyderabad. In that way, Rajasthan will have 14 points and Kolkata, Punjab and Hyderabad will have 12 points each.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata have won two of their last three matches, against Chennai and Delhi. They have 12 points but the worst NRR apart from Chennai. Like Rajasthan, Kolkata’s win will not ensure their qualification for play-offs. They have to beat Rajasthan by a huge margin on Sunday. For them to reach the next level, Kolkata will want Chennai to beat Punjab and Mumbai to defeat Hyderabad.
