SRH's Harry Brook celebrating

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (or SRH) have only been around in the IPL since 2012.

Formerly, it was the Deccan Chargers who were the city of Hyderabad’s representatives in the IPL. But they folded in 2012 after several of their players were banned for different reasons and they faced financial difficulties off the field.

For the most part, it’s been tough going for SRH in such a competitive league, where any mistakes prove to be very costly.

A good example of that is that they finished rock bottom (8/8) in 2012 and finished last season in the same position, though this time around the league had been expanded to 10 teams (8/10).

Having said all that, they’ve done something that the likes of Delhi and RCB have never done in 15 seasons: they won an IPL title.

Back in 2016, they beat the RCB in the final and two years later came extremely close again. They made the final and were very much in the driving seat against Chennai Super Kings defending a stiff total before a brilliant Shane Watson century saw the men in yellow home.

SRH’s response to yet another disappointing season was to make wholesale changes.

Out went coach Tom Moody and skipper Kane Williamson, with South African Aiden Markram promoted to the captaincy and the legendary Brian Lara taking the step up from batting coach to Head Coach.

Let’s see if the changes result in an upturn in their fortunes.

SRH Betting Odds to Win IPL 2023

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s odds to win IPL 2023: 67.00 with Parimatch

The Sunrisers Hyderabad odds to win IPL 2023 are currently 67.00 on Parimatch. That makes them the rank outsiders of the 10 teams in the IPL in 2023, just a little longer in the betting than Delhi Capitals.

They are one of the least IPL betting favorites to win the 2023 trophy according to the major betting sites in India.

They got rid of some ‘dead wood; in the form of two extremely expensive players who had poor seasons and in came some good value-for-money buys who make their team for 2023 look a whole lot stronger.

Let’s wait and see if that is reflected in their results.

SRH At IPL Auction 2023: Notable Players out

Kane Williamson’s long stint at SRH ended in December 2022 when he was released. He paid the price as a skipper for a poor finish and a disappointing season with the bat. 13 games yielded just one 50 and a strike rate of 93.5 is just unacceptable at this level.

It was a similar story with Nicholas Pooran, who failed to live up to the hype after being bought for big bucks ahead of the 2022 season. He did hit two fifties and his strike rate was decent at 144 but he should still have done much better.

Other SRH players released were West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd, Indian duo Priyam Garg and Shreyas Gopal, and Australian quick Sean Abbott. Six other lesser-known Indian players were also released.

Notable Sunrisers Hyderabad Players in

No team had more money in their purse ahead of the 2023 auction than SRH (42.25 Crore) and they went ahead and spent it!

Almost a third of that went on young England superstar Harry Brook (13.25 Crore) of whom much will be expected.

He’ll be joined by experienced opener and sometimes India player Mayank Agarwal (8.25 Crore), West Indies spinner Akeal Hossein (1 Crore), big-hitting South African wicket-keeper Heinrich Klassen (5.25 Crore), England World Cup winning leg spinner Adil Rashid (2 Crore) and Indian bowler Mayank Markande (50 Lakh).

So, lots of new faces in the squad and it won’t be so easy working out who will make their XI for the opening match.

srh Betting Tips For IPL 2023

Here are some betting tips for you to follow:

SRH Top Batsman Betting Tip: Mayank Agarwal

In a long IPL career, Agarwal has been one of the league’s most consistent run-getters and he’s been particularly effective the last four seasons, racking up nine fifties and a century.

Across those four seasons, he’s passed 400 runs on two occasions and 300 on another, though last year was a quiet one by his standards. He didn’t pass 200 runs and looked a bit out of sorts in his debut season as a captain, at the Punjab Kings.

And maybe a move to another franchise is exactly what he needed. We know he’s a class act, he knows these pitches inside out and has the big advantage of being an opening batsman.

The likes of Markram, Brook, and Klassen are all excellent batsmen, but being an opener and spending more time at the crease tilts things Agarwal’s way.

SRH Top Bowler Betting Tip: Umran Malik

Youngster Umran Malik had a superb breakthrough season last time out, taking 22 wickets, though he was on the expensive side, going at over 9 an over for the campaign.

But that’s not what this market is about and when it comes to taking wickets, he’s the one to go with.

Raw pace is the greatest asset a fast bowler can have and this man has it to burn. He regularly bowls at over 150kph and last year bowled a delivery at 157kph against Chennai.

He’s a better and more experienced bowler than he was ahead of last season and if he can keep his accuracy in check, there’s no reason why he can’t get over 20 wickets again. And that should well prove to be enough to end as SRH’s top bowler.

SRH Key Player: Aiden Markram

Since making the transition from opener to number 4 batsman, Markram has become one of the most consistent players in the world in that position.

Despite SRH’s poor season last year, he still scored 381 runs at an average of 47.62 and a superb strike rate of 139.

In early 2023 he led the South African version of SRH, the Eastern Cape Sunrisers, to the inaugural Betway SA20 title, also chipping in with lots of runs, crucial wickets, and excellent fielding to prove what a valuable all-round player he is.

He’s now been given the captaincy at SRH and though they’ll need plenty from him both as a leader and as a player, he has the tools to deliver under pressure.

srh Strengths and weaknesses Ahead Of ipl 2023

  • Very reliable fast bowlers in Kumar, Natarajan, Jansen, and Malik.
  • Middle-order of Brook, Markram, and Klassen looks excellent.
  • Markram could prove to be an excellent captain.

  • Don’t bat particularly deep.
  • Abhishek Sharma is unproven as an IPL opener.
  • Might be an all-rounder light if they don’t find room for Marco Jansen in the team.

Sunrisers Hyderabad IPL Predictions

Here’s our quickfire guide to how SRH may perform in the 2023 IPL.

Where will SRH finish in the 2023 IPL Points table?

No one’s given them much of a chance but they should have a far better season than they did last time out. And they should be better for letting Kane Williamson go and putting plenty of faith in Aiden Markram.

Their middle order looks very strong and their varied, high-class bowling line-up should be able to win them a few games when their batting puts them under pressure.

Brian Lara looks like a good replacement for Tom Moody as Head Coach, who was perhaps there for one or two seasons too many.

All things considered, they could well finish third or fourth, and make the Playoffs for the first time since 2020.
