Favorites To Win 2023 ipl Orange Cap
The IPL odds for IPL top batsman market is quite an exciting one. Here is a list of our top 5 for the spot and prediction in the end.
Faf Du Plessis (3.25)
A somewhat similar story to David Warner in that this is a high-class player but one who at almost 39 would have to seriously turn back the clock if he’s to come close to winning this highly-coveted award.
Last year, his 468 put him seventh in the list of IPL top runscorers for 2022, proof that he’s somewhat consistent. But three fifties in 16 games with no centuries suggests he’s not up there with the very elite anymore.
Sure, he’s still fit enough at his age and can play the long innings. But he’ll need plenty more than that to beat the world’s best players here.
Verdict: He should pass 400 runs for the season once again but that’s highly unlikely to be enough to win it with 550+ runs probably needed to be the Orange Cap winner in 2023.
Jos Buttler (15.0)
Can the Buttler do it again? The England T20 skipper had a brilliant 2022 IPL, winning the Orange Cap with 863 runs from 17 games, which was a remarkable 247 runs more than runner-up KL Rahul.
That included an IPL record four centuries, to go with four fifties, and all this at a strike rate of 149.05. He followed that up by being England’s top scorer at the 2022 T20 World Cup with 225 runs, which they won under his leadership, ending as the 4th highest runscorer in the tournament as a whole.
He ticks every single box for a potential Orange Cap winner, plus an extra one: the Rajasthan Royals look strong and he should play extra matches in the playoffs.
Verdict: Should go very close again.
David Warner (8.0)
The fiery little Australian, who will captain Delhi Capitals in the absence of the injured Rishabh Pant, is a more straightforward case. Though he also ticks a lot of boxes, he can be discounted. Why?
Because the 2021 World Cup aside, he’s been in poor form in this format and the signs are that his best days are behind him. He had a quiet IPL last year, and an indifferent World Cup on home soil and it may be a similar story again this time around.
Verdict: It would be a major surprise if at 36 Warner and out of form, can come close to winning the Orange Cap.
Virat Kohli (8.0)
This time last year we would have laughed at the odds of 8.0 on Virat Kohli. The good news if you’re thinking of backing him is that his form has been excellent over the last 6 months.
He scored a brilliant century against Afghanistan back in August and followed that up by being the top-scorer at the T20 World Cup with 296 runs as India crashed out in the semis.
Kohli has also found his form in the two other formats (Test/ODI), suggesting he’s bang back in form in general and full of confidence. The bad news is he’s been somewhat out of touch with the IPL these last few seasons.
Last year his 341 runs meant he was ranked just 26th for most runs last season. There’s also no guarantee he’ll open the batting for Royal Challengers Bangalore this season and may come in at 3, which is a negative.
Verdict: Price is too short given his recent IPL record and the fact he might not open.
KL Rahul (12.0)
The king of consistency. An Orange Cap winner in 2020 and no one has finished in the Top 3 on a more regular basis than the Lucknow Giants skipper in the last few years, including last year, when he was second with 616 runs, including two centuries and four fifties.
This is a man who saves his best performances for the IPL with the only two possible criticisms being that he can occasionally be a slow starter and that his strike rate last season of 135 was a little below that of the other IPL batting superstars. But he’s the real deal.
Verdict: Another who ticks just about every box and should go really close to winning it with a Top 3 finish almost a certainty.
IPL Orange Cap Winner Betting Tip
This comes down to a straight choice between Jos Buttler and KL Rahul, the two we’d already identified as the most likely winners above.
They have plenty in common as wicket-keeper batsmen who open the innings, finished first and second last year, and have been the two most batsmen in the IPL over the past four or five seasons.
You’ll notice from the list of previous Orange Cap winners that only once has a batsman won it back-to-back (Chris Gayle 2011 and 2012). So that plays somewhat into KL Rahul’s hand.
As does the fact that KL Rahul has so often been in the Top 3 over the past five seasons. According to our 2023 IPL predictions, We are backing KL Rahul to win IPL Orange Cap 2023.
Recommended bet: Back KL Rahul to be Orange Cap Winner 2023 at 12.0 with Betway.
How to bet on the ipl Orange Cap Betting market?
Step 1: Sign in to your favorite IPL betting app.
Step 2: Go to Cricket & choose IPL.
Step 3: Go to Outrights and choose the IPL Top Batsman market.
Step 4: Pick the batsman of your choice and place a bet.
What is each-way betting?
In addition to a straight bet on the Orange Cap winner market, Betway allows you to bet each way which means: ¼ odds, places 3. But what does that actually mean?
The bet is divided into two parts: the batsman winning, and the batsman finishing in the Top 3.
Let’s say you backed Ruturaj Gaikwad each-way for 1000 INR. Half of your bet (500 INR) is placed on Gaikwad winning at 12.0 (see odds table above), the other half on Gaikwad finishing Top 3 at a third of those odds (4.0), also for 500 INR.
If Gaikwad wins, you get paid out on both those bets:
- 500 INR x 12.0 (= 6000 INR) + 500 INR x 4.0 (= 2000 INR) = 8000 INR in total, including stake.
If Gaikwad finished second or third, you’d get paid out only on the second half of your bet, so:
- 500 INR x 4.0 = 2000 INR. You’d then have to deduct the 500 lost on the outright bet, which would still give you a profit of 1500 INR.
Orange Cap winner Betting Tips & sTRATEGIES
Pick an opener
Every single winner of the Orange Cap has been an opening batsman. That’s to be expected. Openers are the only ones who are guaranteed to bat, get to bat in the Powerplay overs where boundaries are easier to score, and have time to play themselves in.
Pick someone who Will Play All Matches
There are some fine opening batsmen to consider but they’re not much good if they’re not going to play at all, or are only going to play some matches. Check our IPL team pages to see whom we expect to open, for their relevant teams.
Check out which players may have to leave early due to international commitments, or won’t play from the start.
For example, England’s Ben Stokes who will play for CSK is likely to miss the Playoffs as he prepares for summer Test matches; KKR’s Shreyas Iyer is likely to miss a few early matches as he continues to recover from injury.
IPL experience crucial
When Ruturaj Gaikwad was the Orange Cap winner in 2021, he was a rare example of a recent winner with less than 2-3 seasons of IPL experience under his belt.
Most online cricket betting analysts opine that knowing the ground dimensions, the wickets, the opposition bowlers, and the teams, vastly increases a batsman’s chances
Strike rate helps their chances
Ideally, you want to back a batsman who has a good record of being around for 14-15 overs to give themselves a good chance of accumulating a good score. But as important as that are batsmen who can score very quickly.
Last year’s winner Jos Buttler and the batsman placed third, Quinton de Kock, had strike rates of 149.05 and 148.97 respectively. What this means is that they scored more runs while facing the same amount of balls as other players in the Top 10.
Such as Faf Du Plessis (strike rate 127.52) or Shikhar Dhawan (strike rate 122.66). Players with high T20 and IPL career strike rates, therefore, have an advantage.
