The IPL odds for IPL top batsman market is quite an exciting one. Here is a list of our top 5 for the spot and prediction in the end.

Faf Du Plessis (3.25)

A somewhat similar story to David Warner in that this is a high-class player but one who at almost 39 would have to seriously turn back the clock if he’s to come close to winning this highly-coveted award.

Last year, his 468 put him seventh in the list of IPL top runscorers for 2022, proof that he’s somewhat consistent. But three fifties in 16 games with no centuries suggests he’s not up there with the very elite anymore.

Sure, he’s still fit enough at his age and can play the long innings. But he’ll need plenty more than that to beat the world’s best players here.

Verdict: He should pass 400 runs for the season once again but that’s highly unlikely to be enough to win it with 550+ runs probably needed to be the Orange Cap winner in 2023.

Jos Buttler (15.0)

Can the Buttler do it again? The England T20 skipper had a brilliant 2022 IPL, winning the Orange Cap with 863 runs from 17 games, which was a remarkable 247 runs more than runner-up KL Rahul.

That included an IPL record four centuries, to go with four fifties, and all this at a strike rate of 149.05. He followed that up by being England’s top scorer at the 2022 T20 World Cup with 225 runs, which they won under his leadership, ending as the 4^th  highest runscorer in the tournament as a whole.

He ticks every single box for a potential Orange Cap winner, plus an extra one: the Rajasthan Royals look strong and he should play extra matches in the playoffs.

Verdict: Should go very close again.

David Warner (8.0)

The fiery little Australian, who will captain Delhi Capitals in the absence of the injured Rishabh Pant, is a more straightforward case. Though he also ticks a lot of boxes, he can be discounted. Why?

Because the 2021 World Cup aside, he’s been in poor form in this format and the signs are that his best days are behind him. He had a quiet IPL last year, and an indifferent World Cup on home soil and it may be a similar story again this time around.

Verdict: It would be a major surprise if at 36 Warner and out of form, can come close to winning the Orange Cap.

Virat Kohli (8.0)

This time last year we would have laughed at the odds of 8.0 on Virat Kohli. The good news if you’re thinking of backing him is that his form has been excellent over the last 6 months.

He scored a brilliant century against Afghanistan back in August and followed that up by being the top-scorer at the T20 World Cup with 296 runs as India crashed out in the semis.

Kohli has also found his form in the two other formats (Test/ODI), suggesting he’s bang back in form in general and full of confidence. The bad news is he’s been somewhat out of touch with the IPL these last few seasons.

Last year his 341 runs meant he was ranked just 26^th for most runs last season. There’s also no guarantee he’ll open the batting for Royal Challengers Bangalore this season and may come in at 3, which is a negative.

Verdict: Price is too short given his recent IPL record and the fact he might not open.

KL Rahul (12.0)

The king of consistency. An Orange Cap winner in 2020 and no one has finished in the Top 3 on a more regular basis than the Lucknow Giants skipper in the last few years, including last year, when he was second with 616 runs, including two centuries and four fifties.

This is a man who saves his best performances for the IPL with the only two possible criticisms being that he can occasionally be a slow starter and that his strike rate last season of 135 was a little below that of the other IPL batting superstars. But he’s the real deal.

Verdict: Another who ticks just about every box and should go really close to winning it with a Top 3 finish almost a certainty.

This comes down to a straight choice between Jos Buttler and KL Rahul, the two we’d already identified as the most likely winners above.

They have plenty in common as wicket-keeper batsmen who open the innings, finished first and second last year, and have been the two most batsmen in the IPL over the past four or five seasons.

You’ll notice from the list of previous Orange Cap winners that only once has a batsman won it back-to-back (Chris Gayle 2011 and 2012). So that plays somewhat into KL Rahul’s hand.

For example, England’s Ben Stokes who will play for CSK is likely to miss the Playoffs as he prepares for summer Test matches; KKR’s Shreyas Iyer is likely to miss a few early matches as he continues to recover from injury.

When Ruturaj Gaikwad was the Orange Cap winner in 2021, he was a rare example of a recent winner with less than 2-3 seasons of IPL experience under his belt.
