Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have won the IPL on two separate occasions but their last win came in 2014. They failed to make the playoffs in the 2020 IPL due to a number of reasons one of which was a lack of leadership in the squad. Dinesh Karthik handed over the captaincy to Eoin Morgan mid-season and KKR ended up finishing 5th on the points table.
Eoin Morgan will lead KKR this season but bookmakers like Bet365 are not very convinced that KKR will be able to win another IPL championship this year. They have given KKR betting odds of 9.00 to win, which means they do not expect KKR to even make it to the playoffs as they have Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, RCB and SRH ahead.
However, out betting experts think different and believe that KKR can and will make it to the playoffs. This is because KKR management made some good buys during the 2021 IPL and plugged a number of their weaknesses which was very evident in the 2020 IPL.
Their bowling looks a lot better now especially with the addition of veteran spinner H Singh and Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan who can accompany V Chakravarthy. Their batting department looks better with the addition of some good domestic talent in K Nair and Sheldon Jackson.
Their keys to victory will be in picking their four overseas players and getting their batting order correct for each game.
Rajasthan Royals
The Royals won the first ever IPL championship under the leadership of Shane Warne but since then has not looked very threatening. They have a very poor IPL in 2020 and finished at the bottom of the IPL points table. Bookmakers are not giving them much of a chance for the 2021 IPL as they have betting odds of 10.00.
The owners of the Rajasthan Royals were not happy with their results in 2020 and have made some significant changes for 2021 which include sacking captain Steve Smith and also letting him go. They decided to give Sanju Samson the captaincy and make some strategic buys during the IPL auction.
Our experts agree with the bookmakers on this one and don’t think the Royals will win because they don’t have a balanced side. They have some great all-rounders with Ben Stokes, Chris Morris and Shivam Dube but they do not have a lot of specialists.
The other concern for the Royals is that Jofra Archer is likely to miss a good part of the IPL or maybe even all of it. If the Royals are going to pose any sort of challenge, it will be up to Sanju Samson to take charge of the side and get some of the younger players like KC Cariappa, Y Jaiswal and Chetan Sakariya to put their hands up.
