IPL 2020 Review: Weekly Wrap-Up & IPL Schedule

By Shaghil Bilali on October 20, 2020

The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League is past halfway mark. It has entered in an interesting stage where we see the maximum movements. The leading teams are trying to grab the No.1 spot. On the other hand, middle and bottom-placed teams are involved in a close fight to get a qualifier place. In this article, we have done IPL 2020 review of the past week’s matches.

The tournament has had a record number of viewers this time around primarily because the Indian audience was starved of cricket betting action for many months. The IPL betting markets have been highly volatile and the matches go down to the wire.

Delhi Capitals’ title to lose?

In the week gone by, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab jumped places. Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings have maintained their positions. Kolkata and Rajasthan, however, slid from their standings.

Delhi (14 points), Mumbai (12), Bangalore (12) and Kolkata (10) are sitting firmly in top-four positions. They are emerging as the best choices for IPL online betting. But it will be crucial for Hyderabad, Punjab, Chennai and Rajasthan who have 6 points each and they are struggling to stay afloat.

Mumbai Indians – IPL 2020 review

Mumbai looked firm to take top spot from Delhi till they lost a thriller in the second super against Punjab on Sunday. It was their first defeat after five consecutive wins.

Mumbai looked in complete control in their match against Kolkata. Powered by Quinton de Kock’s (78 n.o. off 44) and Rohit Sharma’s slow but useful (35 off 36), Mumbai chased down Kolkata’s target of 148 in just 16.5 overs. De Kock purple patch continued as he smashed 53 off 43, supported by Kieron Pollard (34 n.o. off 12), to help Mumbai post 176 for 6 against Punjab. But their opponents pulled off a nail-biter.

Jasprit Bumrah and Deepak Chahar with 4 wickets each were their top bowlers for the week. However, Bumrah still remains their top bowler with 13 wickets in 9 matches.

Delhi Capitals – IPL 2020 review

Delhi regained top spot with two wins this week, but the week will be remembered for Shikhar Dhawan’s explosive knocks. Dhawan scored a 57 off 33 against Rajasthan Royals. He continued in the same vein with his maiden IPL century (101 off 58) against Chennai. Playing like a responsible captain, Shreyas Iyer too scored a half-century against Rajasthan.

Anrich Nortje took four wickets in two matches, while Kegiso Rabada is still the highest wickettaker (19 in 9 matches) in the tournament. Delhi beat Rajasthan by 13 runs, while they had a five-wicket win against Hyderabad. Injured Rishabh Pant is yet to make a comeback. But, Delhi’s main concern was opener Prithvi Shaw’s two successive innings of 0.

Kolkata Knight Riders – IPL 2020 review

Kolkata’s biggest news of the week was Dinesh Karthik handing over captaincy to Eoin Morgan.

On the ground, Kolkata’s campaign was derailed with back-to-back losses against Bangalore and Mumbai. But they beat Hyderabad in super over on Sunday to finish the week in fourth position. Kolkata are plagued with inconsistent opening partnerships and bowling, crippled middle-order batting and failure of Andre Russell.

Opener Shubhman Gill is playing well at one end, but Rahul Tripathi and Tom Banton have been let-downs. Morgan has played some fine innings in the lower-middle order but Russell and Karthik have been average batsmen. It’s ironical that Kolkata’s highest score for the week came from a bowler, Pat Cummins, who scored 53* off 36 against Mumbai. Kolkata bowlers are finding it hard to take opponents’ wickets. For e.g. Debutant Lockie Ferguson’s 3 for 15 (2 wickets in super over) is the only notable performance from a bowler.

Royal Challengers Bangalore – IPL 2020 review

RCB’s two wins and a loss in the week saw them moving from the fourth to third place with 12 points in 9 matches. However, the week will be remembered for De Villiers’s whirlwind knocks where he blew the oppositions away. He scored 73* off 33 against Kolkata and 55* off 22 against Rajasthan to round off the week on a high note.

Virat Kohli maintained consistency with knocks of 43, 48 and 33*. On the other hand, Devdutt Padikkal and Aaron Finch have been consistent as openers. Chris Morris’s figures of 4 for 26 against Rajasthan were the attraction of the week. Bangalore thrashed Kolkata by 82 runs, but they surprisingly lost to Punjab by 8 wickets. They bounced back against Rajasthan for a seven-wicket win.

Sunrisers Hyderabad – IPL 2020 review

Hyderabad lost both their matches for the week, but that’s not the end of their problems. They have lost 4 of their last 5 matches, and look doubtful for a place in the qualifier. Heavily relying on their overseas players, Hyderabad lost to Chennai by 20 runs. Kane Williamson (57 off 39) and Jonny Bairstow showed some resistance, but their middle and lower faltered miserably.

In superover defeat against Kolkata, David Warner (47* off 33), Bairstow (36 off 28) and Williamson (29 off 19) showed some resistance. But slow run speed in the last few overs saw the team in a tie for 163.

Needless to say, they need to make some serious amends to stay afloat. With just 6 points in 9 matches, they are running against time.

Rajasthan Royals – IPL 2020 review

Rajasthan have lost 6 of their last 7 matches and they look completely out of contention. They have six points from nine matches with NRR of -0.778. Rajasthan are also relying heavily on their foreign imports.

Robin Uthappa (41 off 22) gave them a brisk start against Bangalore, while Steve Smith (57 off 36) capitalised on it. But their efforts fell short against the powerful batting of Bangalore. Chasing 162 against Delhi, Ben Stokes (41 off 35) and Uthappa (32 off 27) held the fort for some time, but it was soon breached by the opponent bowlers.

Chennai Super Kings – IPL 2020 review

Coming off two losses, Chennai started the week’s campaign with 20-run win over Hyderabad. But Delhi’s Dhawan (101*) and Axar Patel (21* off 5) dashed their hopes of a back-to-back win. Chennai have just 6 points from nine matches.

Chennai suffered another setback as Dwayne Bravo’s injury flared up again and he will be sitting outside. It crippled the already depleted Chennai side with Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh already ruling themselves out before the start of the tournament. Shane Watson (36 against Delhi and 42 against Hyderabad), Ambati Rayudu (45* and 41) have been their most consistent batsmen for the last week. Faf du Plessis (58 off 47) was the top scorer for Chennai. Bravo (3 wickets in 2 matches) was Chennai’s highest wickettaker.

Kings XI Punjab – IPL 2020 review

With two consecutive wins last week, Punjab have revitalised their dull campaign. First, it was KL Rahul (61* off 49), Mayank Agarwal (45 off 25) and Chris Gayle (53 off 45), who guided the team to a thrashing 8-wicket win over Bangalore. On Sunday, Rahul (77 off 51) was again in his elements as he helped Punjab level score at 176.

But, after the score in the first super over also came to a level, Agarwal turned out to be the gamechanger for Punjab. With a memorable win, Punjab rose from bottom-placed position to 6th after9 matches.
