The Royal Calcutta Turf Club is set to hold six races on Saturday 12th March and The Police Commissioner’s Cup is the second race of the day scheduled for 3 pm. This is a Class II race for horses rated 61-86, while horses rated 41-66 are also eligible.
The race features a mix of horses between 4 and 8 years with ratings between 61 and 77.
Being a Class II race, horse race betting professionals are likely to witness some tough competition with Topnotch, Mogul, Kimaya, Nova, and Big Star being strong contenders and among the most experienced of the six runners.

The six runners are well-bred and we would say that any one of them could conquer the distance on the day. The 6-year-old bay gelding Topnotch has tasted success over the same 1400m distance once out of its 25 outings but that was a long time ago in December 2019.
Kimaya, a 6-year-old chestnut mare, has also conquered 1400m on two occasions out of her 22 outings. Big Star, the 8-year-old bay horse is a star over this distance having notched up six victories although the last win over 1400m was a year ago.
Up amongst horses half his age, it may prove to be quite a task for Big Star to keep up the pace. However, he cannot be written off under any circumstances.
Nova, the 5-year-old bay mare has also proved her mettle over the 1400m distance as recently as mid-Dec 2021 in the finalist handicap. Mogul, the 4-year-old bay colt has two wins and a second placing in his last three outings which means he is well capable of hitting the post ahead of the competition.

TOPNOTCH – Top Class(USA) / Elzaam
Last 5 runs: 2-4-1-4-3
The 6-year-old bay gelding is expected to perform well and comes from a strong bloodline, having been sired by Top Class(USA) who has produced several top-class horses. At 77, it is the top-rated horse in this race. From the stables of Manvendra Singh, the gelding will be saddled by jockey Afzal Khan. Of its last five outings, Topnotch managed to win by an impressive 4 ½ lengths in the Royal Mantle Handicap at the beginning of Jan this year.
MOGUL – Excellent Art(GB) / Vittoria

The 4-year-old bay colt certainly seems to have what it takes to lift the Police Commissioner’s Cup. It most recently conquered 1400m in the Dist.3291 Cup at the beginning of February and then finished second in the M B Medhora Cup over 1200m just over a week later. Trained by Vijay Singh, Mogul will be ridden by top jockey Suraj Narredu. He is the second top-rated horse in this race at 75.
THE PROTECTOR – Excellent Art(GB) / Mauna Kea
Last 5 runs: 8-1-3-4-6
The 4-year-old bay gelding is from the stables of Faisal A Abbas and will have jockey R S Bhati in the saddle. The Protector also conquered the 1400m distance back in November last year in The Miss X O Lence Handicap. This horse is clearly a better sprinter than a stayer and should cover this distance pretty comfortably.
KIMAYA – Sedgefield(USA) / Saporelli
Last 5 runs: 2-6-4-4-6
The 6-year-old chestnut mare is quite an experienced runner with as many as 22 outings to her credit. She has managed to win 1400m races twice and is likely to be a strong contender in this race too. Her last three outings were over longer distances between 1600m and 2400m which makes it evident that she is more comfortable over shorter distances.
Trained by Vikash Jaiswal, the mare will have jockey Sujit Kr Paswan at the reins.
NOVA – Leitir Mor(IRE) / Sorrento Steel(GB)
Last 5 runs: 1-1-4-1-2
The 5-year-old bay mare is quite experienced and was successful over 1400m in December last year. 1200m seems to be easy going as well, having notched up to two victories in her last five outings. From the stables of H S Bath, Nova will be saddled up by experienced jockey Neeraj Rawal.
BIG STAR (Ex-Name: PROTECTOR OF TROY) – Western Aristocrat(USA) / Knockenduff(GB)
Last 5 runs: 11-12-5-11-4
The 8-year-old bay horse is the most experienced among the runners, having notched up six wins, and thirteen placings in 43 runs. Big Star clearly hasn’t been in form recently over the 1200m-1400m distances but does have 6 wins over 1400 over his racing career.
The mare trains under the watchful eye of DM David and will have jockey Rupal Singh in control of the reins.
