A bay gelding from the loins of Tazahum (USA) off dam Karisini, Defender is billed as one of the favourites for this race. He has already had two runs, with a fourth-place finish in his last outing as the best performance. Trained by Neil Darashah, Defender will have S Zervan in the saddle on Sunday.
Roman Senator
Stallion Multidimensional (IRE) has two of his progeny in this race, and both are expected to shine. Our eyes are on Roman Senator, whose dam is Ave Maria. A bay colt with three races run already, (one third-place and one fourth among them), he will be marshaled by jockey A Sandesh in this race. The vastly experienced S Padmanabhan is his trainer.
Hukumat
This filly is an issue of Win Legend (JPN) and dam Epic. Trained by SS Attaollahi, she has run two races so far, finishing below the top four in both of them. P Trevor will hope to improve on that record when he takes her reins on Sunday.
Our Pick – Roman Senator gets our nod ahead of Defender, but only by a narrow margin and as long as the odd makers start listings at 5/1. Those two should be the ones fighting for the top spot in our books. As for a long shot punt, Hukumat is a decent shout.
2. The Chief Minister’s Cup
A Grade 3 race for horses four years and over, this is the most hotly anticipated of all Sunday races. At 1200m it will definitely suit the sprinters over the stayers. The field is quite large for this event, with a dozen horses in the running. The oldest is nine years, while the average age of the competition is just around the 5-year mark. The total prize purse for this event is INR 981569, or roughly 11500 GBP.

Cavallo Veloce
Cavallo Veloce is a hugely experienced 5-year-old colt that is sired by Lucifer Sam (USA) off Mink Mitten (GB). Trained by B Suresh, this bay horse has 7 wins to his credit from 22 runs, with eight other finishes in the top four. He returns to the Bangalore Race Club after a successful stint at Ooty, winning his last race there in May. His recent record is quite impressive: 1-1-3-2-1. Imran Khan will have his reins on Sunday.
Accolade
With five 5 and 14 top-four finishes after 25 runs, Accolade is quite the consistent performer. Accolade is the son or Burden of Proof (IRE) off dam Alnasreya (IRE), with the 6-year-old bay horse trained by SS Attaollahi.
Having finished in the top 4 for the last five runs without a win (2-2-4-3-3) he should be raring to break this drought on Sunday. Suraj Narredu will be in the saddle for the Chief Minster’s Cup.
Star Baron
The 4-year-old bay colt is in imperious form, having won 8 out of his 13 starts so far, with another 3 in the top four. A progeny of Total Gallery (IRE) and Soviet Angel, this horse comes to Bangalore from Ooty where he scored a pair of back to back wins in March-April this year. Star Baron’s recent record is quite formidable – 2-6-1-1-2. His trainer is B Suresh, and the very impressive S Zervan will be the jockey on Sunday.
Our Pick – For us, it is a tough pick between Cavallo Veloce and Star Baron, with the latter having a slight edge if the book makers begin listing at 5/1. For a third alternative, we highly suggest the very reliable Accolade.
