What Are Our Horse Race Betting Tips For July 21st?
Without further ado, here is how we rate the top horses in these two big races at the Bangalore Race Club:
1. The BTC Anniversary Cup
This Grade 2 race has been a regular event on Derby days at Bangalore over the years. Along with the 3-year-olds Mystical Million, it easily ranks as the top two events of the day, after the actual derby itself. It also happens to be one of the few races of its class run over a distance of 1400m. This year’s race card mentions 12 horses, all four-year-olds or above. Here are our favourites for the BTC Anniversary Cup in 2019:
Mauritania
Sired by Excellent Art (GB) and Classic Sky, this bay gelding is one of the leading names in the list for this race. Trained by S Padmanabhan, Mauritania has an enviable record in Bangalore. He has only finished outside the top two once in 10 runs in the racecourse here. Another fact working in his favour is his jockey David Allan, with whom he has had some excellent results in the past.
Corfe Castle
The half brother to Mauritania off dam Miss Danehill (IRE), Corfe Castle is another strong runner in the pack. The 5-year-old bay gelding is a ward of trainer LD Silva and has finished ahead of Mauritania in the past. His record is also quite impressive, with five wins and four number two spots out of 13 starts so far. The highly experienced Suraj Narredu will have his reins on Sunday.
La Rondine
This bay filly comes from the bloodline of Kingda Ka (AUS) and Rahy’s Serenade (USA). Trained by Vishal Gaekwad, she started her career with a bang, winning the 1000 Guineas (Gr 1) in her second race. Though her trajectory has been a bit below par since that win, she still has five top-three finishes out of six races (with three wins) to her credit. With Akshay Kumar in the saddle, she will be looking to get back to the spotlight on Sunday.
Our Picks – Tutankhamun was the horse which would have dominated the totes had he been available for this race. In his absence, Mauritania and Corfe Castle look like they have the best shot at glory. If the odds makers begin listing at 5/1 we prefer Mauritania due to the fact that his trainer is S Padmanabhan, who has won a hattrick in this race between 2008 and 2010. As a long-shot pick, La Rondine is a an excellent option in our books.
2. The Kingfisher Ultra Derby Bangalore
Much like the BTC Cup, this year’s derby will be marked by the absence of a strong contender – Warhammer. The colt has been dominating the racing scene like no other and would have ranked as the tote favourite. With him not in the running, the field is wide open. The 2000m race will feature ten 3-year-old colts and fillies this year. For our horse race betting tips, we rate the following trio highly for the Derby:
Impavid
The half brother of the missing Warhammer, Impavid (Air Support – Polenta) stands to gain the most from his absence. Having lost to Warhammer by the thinnest of margins, this dark brown colt returns to the track as a top contender. Trained by Arjun Mangalorkar, he will have jockey A Sandesh in the saddle on Sunday for the big one. His four-race record looks like this: 1-1-1-2.
Well Connected
This bay filly is the only unbeaten horse in the race card. But with just two races under her kitty, Well Connected also happens to be rather inexperienced. The experience of trainer Padmanabhan does balance the equation quite a bit. Well Connected is sired by Arazan (IRE) off dam Guest Connections. She will have the foreigner David Allan piloting her on Sunday.
Anjeze
The progeny of Win Legend (JPN) and Angelique, Anjeze is a bay filly with a record similar to Impavid. But while the latter enhanced his reputation in his last race while losing to War Hammer, Anjeze’s third place in the Fillies Championship took some sheen off her record. Trained by SS Attaollahi, this light-framed filly does have her task cut out on Sunday against stronger opposition. She has been paired with jockey Akshay Kumar for this race.
Our Picks – Impavid looks the strongest out of them all, which is our pick as long as the bookmakers start listing at 5/1 with Well Connected second as the top challenger, largely due to her inexperience. For a horse with long odds, Anjeze seems to fit the bill.
