Derby Day at the Bangalore Race Course lived up to its billing. Horse race bettors experienced an exciting day filled with white-hot racing action and nail-biting finishes. There were also a fair few upsets at the sportsbooks along the way. While the Derby itself proved to be a contest between the top two contestants, it was far more open in the BTC Anniversary Cup. The latter was the second biggest race on the day which we covered in our Bangalore Race Course bets preview.

Bangalore Race Course Bets Racing Review

Here are Sunday’s results from the Bangalore Turf Club:

The BTC Anniversary Cup

The 2019 edition of the Cup proved to be a wide-open race, where none of the tote favourites really turned up. As our top picks, we had Mauritania and Corfe Castle, but both of them were well off the pace in sixth and seventh spots. However, our long shot pick, La Rondine, fared marginally better finishing fifth.

Here are the three horses who subsequently ended up on the podium in this race:

1. Knotty Ash

A four-year-old bay colt from the stables of trainer Prasanna Kumar, Knotty Ash was not highly fancied for this race. But the progeny of Gusto (GB) and Dovers Hill ran a ferocious race, finishing ahead of the pack by a margin of just over two lengths. Antony Raj was also the jockey astride Knotty Ash as he cantered to the fifth win of his 12-race career.

2. Prevalent Force

Sired by Multidimensional (IRE) off dam Prevalence, Prevalent force is a five-year-old bay colt. Trained by Darius Byramji, he was piloted by jockey S Zervan in this race. Prevalent force is a quite experienced horse with eight wins out of 17 races. But this was just the third time that he found himself in second place.

3. Automatic

A dark brown gelding trained by Irfan Ghatala, Automatic is the offspring of Lord Admiral (USA) and Taxido. He has 17 top-three finishes out of 25 runs, with five of them as a winner. On Sunday, he was ridden by jockey PS Chouhan.

The Kingfisher Ultra Derby Bangalore

As we already mentioned, the Derby was predictably thrilling, with the top two horses fighting it out till the end. We had our eyes on Impavid and Well Connected, the two tote favourites for this event. As a long shot, we suggested the struggling Anjeze, who ended the race in seventh. But all eyes were on the leading pair, and here is how things ended:

1. Well Connected

This ward of Padmanabhan was our number two pick only due to her relative inexperience. But with the excellent David Allan in the saddle, Well Connected delivered a flawless performance, keeping pace with the leader Impavid before overtaking him at the final stretch. It was a race of thin margins, with just a long neck separating the two. This is now Well Connected’s third win and she remains unbeaten after three runs.

2. Impavid

This is the second time in a row that Impavid ran a great race and still came away with just second spot. The manner in which he lost his lead near the post will hurt, but there is no doubting the quality of this horse, or his fighting spirit. Arjun Mangalorkar has a great prospect in his yard.

3. Knight Templar

This was a good day at the races for Trainer Padmanabhan, with his “other horse” getting the third spot. A bay colt sired by Multidimensional (IRE) off Grand Madame, Knight Templar is yet to finish outside the top three in three runs so far. S Zervan was his jockey on Sunday.
