The Royal Calcutta Turf Club plays host to the Calcutta St. Leger this Wednesday, 2 March 2022, which is race no. 6 out of seven races to be held in the afternoon. Punters are sure to enjoy betting on their favourites to win the race, which is sure to be a tough one since, out of the six runners, three horses seem to have the potential to hit the winning post.

The Calcutta St. Leger is one of the premier races of the season with Rs. 2,155,000 shared between the horses to finish in the top four. The winner will make its connections richer by Rs. 1,293,000.

This is a terms race open to horses 4 years old only and they will travel a distance of 2800m. Incidentally, none of the runners have covered this distance before, the maximum being 2400m.

The ratings are evenly spread between 62 and 82 while most of the runners will carry 57kgs, except for the 4-year-old bay filly, Kamilah, who will be carrying 55.5kgs. With jockey P. Trevor in the saddle, punters may well consider the filly a betting prospect, one that is capable of shooting past the winning post.

ODDS TO WIN The CALCUTTA ST. LEGER RACE

You can find the horses with the best odds to win the Calcutta St. Leger below:

S No Horse Odds On Betway
1 Kamilah 3.50
2 Eastwood 4.00
3 Third Avenue 5.00
4 The Protector 9.00
5 Jake 11.00
6 Galen 13.00

Although all the six runners come from quality bloodlines there are a few that shouldn’t find it too hard to stretch the distance. Kamilah has the most impressive record over her last five outings with three wins and two-second places.

Noteworthy is the fact that she finished second in her last two outings over 2400m, which is the maximum she has travelled in her career so far. The dark bay gelding, Eastwood, is a strong contender, having conquered 2400m in its last outing and should find the going good in this race.

Third Avenue, the bay colt, finished second in his last race over 2400m and should also be comfortably placed in St. Leger horse race today.

Recommended Betting Tip: Kamilah (3.50)

Let’s take a closer look at all the runners and the strong contenders in this race:

EASTWOOD – Phoenix Tower (USA) – Doe Ray Me (GB)

Last 5 runs: 3 – 1 – 2 – 2 – 1

The dark bay gelding is among the top contenders coming from a strong bloodline, having been sired by Phoenix Tower (USA) who has produced many winners.

From the stables of veteran trainer C Alford, experienced jockey Suraj Nareddu will be in the saddle. Eastwood most recently won The Calcutta Derby Stakes (Gr.1) over 2400m so travelling the extra 400m may not seem so difficult for a horse in form.

GALEN – Win Legend (JPN) – Sunshine Nell (USA)

Last 5 runs: 1 – 6 – 3 – 9 – 8

The chestnut colt doesn’t have much of an impressive record and finished 8th in his last outing in The Calcutta Derby Stakes over 2400m. His only victory came back in September last year in The Sreepriya Handicap over 1200m. Trained by Vijay Singh, jockey Hindu Singh will be in control of the reins.

JAKE – Win Legend (JPN) – Aerona

Last 5 runs: 1 – 3 – 1 – 7 – 5

This four-year-old bay colt has tasted success twice in his last 5 runs but the distances were a mere 1100m and 1400m. The distance of 2400m did not seem to suit him in his last run in The Calcutta Derby Stakes, where he finished fifth, a good 8 lengths behind the winner.

This is trainer Vijay Singh’s second runner in the race while jockey Antony Raj will be saddling up.

THE PROTECTOR – Excellent Art (GB) – Mauna Kea

Last 5 runs: 5 – 8 – 1 – 3 – 4

The four-year-old bay gelding also found the distance of 2400m a bit overwhelming in The Calcutta Derby Stakes, its last outing in the middle of Feb. Its only victory was in The Miss X O Lence Handicap last November over a distance of 1400m.

From the stables of Faisal Abbas, the gelding will be steered by jockey C S Jodha.

THIRD AVENUE – Ampere (FR) – Avant Garde

Last 5 runs: 1 – 1 – 1 – 2

This four-year-old bay colt is a strong contender having three wins and a second place in his four outings. 2400m is the longest he’s travelled, which was in The Poker Guru Cup in early Feb. this year, where he finished second.

We’d rate Third Avenue as a strong contender in St. Leger. Trained by Arti Doctor, the colt will be guided down the track by jockey Neeraj Rawal.

KAMILAH – Roderic O’Connor (IRE) – My Lakshmi

Last 5 runs: 1 – 1 – 1 – 2 – 2

Kamilah is the lone filly in the race and has one of the most impressive records in her last five runs, three wins and two-second places. She’s finished second in her last two runs in The Calcutta Oaks (Gr.3) and The Calcutta Derby Stakes (Gr.1) over 2400m and is likely to make her connections happy this time over 2800m.

While the filly is from veteran trainer S K Sunderji’s stable, jockey P. Trevor will be looking to steer her to victory in St. Leger.
